Full MA & PhD Scholarships for Sub-Saharan African Students: For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record the DRD (Development Research Division) of the DAAD-funded South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year.

Scholarships are available for full-time students of:

  • the MA and M Econ in Development Studies,
  • the Master in Public Administration,
  • the MA in Development Management (Bochum Programme),
  • the PhD in International Development Studies.

Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates.

Requirements for application and application procedure

  • Scholarship applicants are adviced to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the programme of their choice.

Candidates for;

  • The Masters Programme in Public Administration (MPA),
  • The MA and M Econ in Development Studies as well as PhD candidates in the fields of Governance,
  • Public Policy,
  • Public Management or Development Studies can submit their scholarship application before they register with UWC through the online application procedure.
  • Please submit a letter of application, the DAAD application form (see below), a CV, an academic transcript from your last university and two academic references.

Applicants will be informed about their applications by the end of October.

Duke Law School Scholarships: Duke Law School has established two half-tuition merit scholarships for extremely well-qualified students to attend the LLM program.

Outstanding applicants should submit with their LLM application a letter including the following information:

(1) a statement describing major professional, academic, and other qualifications,

(2) reasons for applying for the scholarship, such as what you can contribute to the Duke Law community, and

(3) names of persons other than those on the LLM application who can be contacted for additional references.

Granting of scholarship requests will be announced concurrently with admission decisions.

The amount granted for the Duke Law School Scholarships is approximately USD $59,000.

These scholarships aim to assist talented but economically disadvantaged students from some of the world’s poorest countries.

The scholarships are jointly funded by the University of Manchester and its alumni. The University waives the tuition fee in full and the generosity of alumni covers students’ living costs and flights to the UK.

Supporting Outstanding Students

The scheme operates in Uganda, Rwanda and Bangladesh. Scholarships are available for students to undertake postgraduate Masters degrees that are not available in their home country and which are intended to fill a particular skills gap. Awards are also available for study by distance learning.

To date, 85 students have received support to undertake Masters degrees (full-time or online) and more than 250 students have received awards to study in their home country on a University-validated programme.

Full-time Campus-based Postgraduate Taught Masters – Scholarship Eligibility

The scholarships are aimed at applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants must:

  • Be a resident citizen of Uganda/Rwanda/Bangladesh and have not previously studied abroad;
  • Hold a first or upper second class (or the equivalent) undergraduate degree;
  • Have a minimum of two years relevant work experience;
  • Be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate his/her potential to make a positive impact in the future at home;
  • Have a clear idea how studying in the UK would benefit both his/her career and the development of home country.

Scholarship Subjects

Scholarships are available in a wide range of subjects including Engineering, Environment, Medical and Life Sciences, Law and Education.

The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return international airfares and living expenses.

Masters Scholarships by Distance Learning

Scholarships are also available for the following distance learning programmes:

  • Master of Public Health (MPH)
  • MSc Human Resource Management and Development
  • MSc Management and Information Systems

Scholarships cover all tuition fees, course materials and examinations. For online courses students will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection, and a basic level of computer skills is required.

Scholarship Eligibility

The scholarships are aimed at applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants must:

  • Be a resident citizen of Uganda/Rwanda/Bangladesh and have not previously studied abroad;
  • Hold a first or upper second class (or the equivalent) undergraduate degree;
  • Have a minimum of two years relevant work experience;
  • Be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact in the future at home;
  • Have a clear idea how studying in the UK would benefit both his/her career and the development at home;
