Members of parliament have had mixed reactions over government’s plans of separating married couples who teach in the same school saying such a move may cause student’s performances to deteriorate in schools.

The legislators raised these concerns on Monday while deliberating on the ministry of education and sport’s recent reports that indicated they are reportedly developing a transfer policy, which is being pushed as a measure to avoid teachers who are married to teach in the same school.

Butemba MP in Kyankwanzi district, Innocent Pentagon Kamusiime.

Butemba MP in Kyankwanzi district, Innocent Pentagon Kamusiime and Manjiya County MP, John Baptist Nambeshe questioned the motive of the Ministry of education when they instead argued that there are a number of professionals who work in the same sectors while married. They gave an example of politicians who are also ministers and others working as members of parliament.

Kamusiime suggested that couples should only be separated from working in the same school environment only when they feel uncomfortable about the situation.

Nambeshe, on the other hand says that a married teachers’ motivating factor is teaching in the same school rather separating them.
