High Sugar prices are likely to come down as the country is expecting sugar imports from Brazil and South Africa this month. The ministry of Trade and Industry says that the deadline for receiving much of the imported sugar is January 2012.

Trade Minister, Amelia Kyambadde informs us that all obstacles in the importation process have been addressed and so Ugandans must expect sugar imports late this month. A kilogramme of sugar now goes at 4500 shillings compared to 8,000 in September.

Amelia also says that the government is doing whatever is possible to boost the local production. She says that the government is encouraging more people to do out growing of sugar canes and the sugar factories to use irrigation to boost their production. The minister assures Ugandans that there will be sugar price falls when sugar importations arrive in the country.

The policy requires manufactures to fulfill the excepted minimum standards of production. The senior industrial officer in the ministry of trade Francis Odong says the policy is one of the requirements by the world trade organization of 1995.

Odong says the accreditation policy aims at goods and services so as to have international recognition which in turn improves Uganda’s competitiveness across borders.

Odong adds that Uganda faces numerous challenges of substandard goods and can’t compete at the international markets because of lack of accreditation body.

He points out that the ministry of trade animal and industry has a comprehensive plan of support the agriculture sector.
