Police, NAADS investigate lost farmer inputs

The National Agricultural Advisory Services together with the police are investigating the loss of over 5bn shillings meant for various NADDS programs.

According to the Executive Director NAADs Dr Samuel Mugasi, the money was lost in the districts of Masaka, Rakai and Lyantonde among others.

He says the money was meant for the supply of improved seeds and training of farmers.

However in most cases the seeds that were supplied were of low quality while in other cases nothing was supplied at all.

Mugasi says though that the NAADS task force has already recovered 3bn shillings from the districts of Kanungu, Luwero and Mbarara among others.

He adds that prosecution of the officials involved will be done soon and those found guilty shall be brought to book.

He was speaking during an annual review of the program held in Kampala.

NAADS Chairman Mwalimu Musheshe appeals for more attention to agriculture and food security

Ugandans have been urged to utilize the services of the National Agriculture Advisory services to improve their farming and ensure enough food for local consumption and export.

In an interview, the chairman of NAADS board of directors Mwalimu Musheshe says NAADS services are available in all the 112 districts of the country and will soon be rolled out in all the villages.

Musheshe attributes the current high food prices to high demand coupled with export of food to foreign markets especially to Sudan, Kenya, and DRC.

He observed that food production has not increased yet the demand is on the increase.
Musheshe also noted that a few people in anyone given family are engaged in food production yet all members of the family need to eat.

He says NAADS is appealing that government increase funding to the agricultural sector in accidence to the Maputo protocol which requires at least 15% of national budgets to be allocated to agriculture, the key sector of the economy.

NAADS program suspended in Kakeka sub-county

Farmers under the NAADS program in Kakeka sub-county in Mbarara district are likely to miss funding in the next financial year 2011-2012 as a result by the sub-county’s failure to co fund as the-government policy requires.

Mbarara district vice chairperson and secretary for production Godfrey Baryomunsi disclosed this during a one day review planning meeting for farmers involved in NAADS program at Kakeka sub-county in Kashari County Mbarara district.

He said Kakeka sub-county farmers with positive committed efforts and participated in NAADS unfortunately their efforts failed by the sub-county accountant Zabrone Bantu who stole sub-county funds valued over 73 million shillings.

The National Agriculture Advisory services program offers improved agriculture input, technical guidance and capital where necessary to farmers that show potential to improve and gain from commercial agriculture.
