President of the Conservative Party Ken Lukyamuzi says that the legal and parliamentary affairs committee should take the views on the age limit removal from the opposition seriously.

Lukyamuzi says that the leaders from the Democratic Party that s Norbert Mao, Fred Mukasa Mbidde and representatives from JEEMA appeared before the committee against the wishes of their members.

He says party members warned them against appearing before the committee because of their strong resistance against amending article 102(b) on the age limits of 35 to 75 years for presidential candidates.

Meanwhile, Mao says that although he himself had said initially that he would not appear before the committee, he changed his mind with the aim of convincing the committee to oppose the bill.

Mbidde says that there is a possibility to challenge the legality of the bill because of the violence meted on MPs on the day the motion to introduce it was moved.

He says the bill should have been subjected to people power because the quality of elections is still wanting in Uganda.

He  says that the article can be subjected to a referendum and the Bukholi county North MP Gaster Mugoya says the provision can rendered as one that can be entrenched

The committee meeting that was presided over by the vice chairperson Robinah Rwakoojo commedned the leaders for not shunning their invitation, which they agreed was a sign of tolerance and civility in multiparty politics.

The Democratic Party President, Nobert Mao has welcomed the initiative by Parliament to recognize the former and serving MPs with medals saying the recipients deserve it for the work they did to their country.

The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga in conjunction with the Presidential Awards committee are yet to award golden Jubilee awards worth 600m shillings to MPs who served in different legislatives since Uganda’s
independence up to 2012.

Being one of those on the list to receive a medal, Mao says it is not a bad idea because it’s recognition for achievement.

Meanwhile, Lubaga North MP, Moses Kasibante disagrees with the idea of giving MPs medals saying that it’s wastage of money noting that ever since the country gained independence, there is no much successful achievements that have been  attained as claimed.

The Democratic Party (DP) has revealed plans to petition court over the government extension of the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihur’s contract.

Talking to the media today, the DP president, Norbert Mao said that Kayihura’s contract shouldn’t have been renewed because he has committed a lot atrocities on innocent Ugandans during his past two year terms.

Mao says that Kayihura has done nothing worth letting to the renewal of his contract as IGP.

He says that many people particularly on the opposition have been imprisoned and the rule of law abused during Kayihura’s previous contract.

Mao says that before cleared Kayihura for this new contract, parliament would have sought for comments from the opposition political parties and civil society organization.

The Democratic Party has threatened to sue the government if it expels teachers who don’t report for duty, due to the ongoing threat by teachers to strike.

The Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi over the weekend threatened to punish teachers who don’t report for duty at the opening of the third term.

Last term the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) called for the strike asking the Government to increase their salaries by 100%.

DP president Norbert Mao says the teachers “complaints are genuine and therefore deserve thorough attention.

Mao says the matter requires diplomatic solutions like dialogue instead of threatening the teachers, the way the Government is doing.

He says the party will sue the government if it dares dismiss any teacher for failing to report on the day of term opening. Mao says that DP will trounce the Government in court like it has previously been.

The Democratic Party has petitioned the East African Court of Justice, challenging the procedure followed in choosing representatives to the community’s Parliament.

The party says the way in which members of the East African Legislative Assembly are chosen is illegal. The party is seeking an interim order halting the process of electing new representatives.

The DP Party President, Norbert Mao says representatives to the assembly should be taken from all parties that have members in the Parliament as provided for in the treaty governing the community.

Currently, representatives to the assembly are chosen basing on the party numerical strength in Parliament with the NRM forwarding 7 Members and 2 for FDC.

Mao says Kenya was in a similar situation and had to review its procedure.

Through its lawyers of Ssemuyaba and Company Advocates, DP will appear before the Court on the 23rd of this month to present its application for the interim order.

According to the party president Nobert Mao ,over 1000 families cannot be thrown out of their houses without government offering an alternative solution yet it’s a right for every Ugandan to live in a decent home as provide by the constitution.

The government however insists that the tenants were warned and paid off more than five years ago but had stubbornly refused to vacate the government owned dilapidated houses which the government wants to develop.

The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Daudi Migereko says the tenants on question were given all the help they needed and free accommodation but they have refused to vacate the premises for re-development.

Meanwhile, DP has also warned government on committing crimes against its own citizens attributing the recent lightening to it saying it’s a punishment from God though there are other causes.

Democratic Party today welcomed the move by government to bring in court all government officials who engaged in the misuse and embezzlement of public funds.

Former Uganda President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya

According to Democratic Party President Nobert Mao, it is absurd and embarrassing for one person to misuse the money alone yet there are no drugs in hospitals, roads are in a sorry state, schools lucks adequate facilities, prices of essential commodities are so high among other problems that needs redress.

This follows the summoning of former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya over the misuse of CHOGM funds when Uganda hosted the Commonwealth Heads of government meeting in 2007.

The government yesterday said all those implicated in the CHOGM scandal and other corruption related practices will be brought before court after thorough investigations.

However, Mao calls upon government not to apply selective justice in this move so that everybody engaged in such frauds be brought to book.

The Democratic Party has challenged the newly constituted 9th parliament to begin a impeachment proceeding against President Yoweri Museveni for alleged being corrupt aiding and defending corruption in the country.

Col. Edson Muzoora

Addressing a news conference at their party headquarters in Kampala, Democratic Party president Norbert Mao also poured scorn on the impending prosecution of former vice president professor Gilbert Bukenya as selective Justice

Mao also said among other people who should once again be investigated and prosecuted by the Anti-corruption court are the current prime minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, Somson Kahamba Sam Kutesa be brought to book.

In a related development DP President also accused the government of Uganda of masterminding and killing the former retired UPDF army officer retired Col. Edison Muzora.

The 58 year soldier’s body was discovered dumped near his home in Bushenyi district on Saturday night last week 9 years after he went into exile after falling out with national resistance movement (NRM) government.

The government accused him of being part of the people’s redemption army. The renegade soldier was on Monday but the circumstances leading to his death remain unclear. Mao says Col. Muzora was lured from the Jangles of the Democratic Republic of Congo with amnesty only to be told to sign confession implicating FDC leader retired Col. Kiiza Besigye in PRA operations which he declaimed.

But the Uganda army has refuted any knowledge of the circumstances of Col. Muzoora’s death and say investigations into the matter are underway.

NRM legislator of Lwemiyaga County in Ssembabule district Theodore Ssekikubo has blasted the Inspector General of Government Raphael Baku over what Ssekikubo has called selectivity in preference of criminal summons against those implicated in corruption.

Addressing the press, Ssekikubo says that Baku , who was thought to be a blessing at the time of his appointment, has exhibited a high degree of selectivism in charging criminals.

IGG Raphael Baku

His comments follow the court summons that were issued to the former Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya who headed the CHOGM cabinet sub committee in 2007.

Bukenya was summoned along with Motorcare, a company that supplied the BMWs that were used for transporting CHOGM guests.

Bukenya however consistently insisted the decisions of the subcommittee of cabinet were a collective responsibility of all cabinet members.

Uganda lost over 500bn shillings in the process, most of which was embezzled.

Ssekikubo says other ministers and Government officials who the Auditor General’s report pointed out such as Sam Kuteesa, Hope Mwesigye and Amama Mbabazi should also be summoned.

Meanwhile, Opposition Democratic Party President Norbert Mao has also castigated Government’s selective application of justice on Prof. Bukenya saying Amama Mbabazi and Sam Kuteesa should also be prosecuted.

Mao says the impending arrest and prosecution of Bukenya is a result of selective justice.
