Local leaders in Acholi sub region have confirmed that no new cases of nodding disease have been reported in the past few months.

The revelation was made by the Elders early today as President Yoweri Museveni unveiled Government plans to address social dislocation in Northern Uganda

The President said he was pleased with the development following the mass treatment campaign he launched against river blindness in March in Pader district.

Medical experts have linked the nodding disease to the Black fly which also causes river blindness, prompting the president to order for massive treatment and spraying.

Kitgum woman MP Beatrice Anywar has asked government to set up protective homes for nodding syndrome people in Kitgum.

Anywar said that several of girls who are victims of nodding syndrome were defiled by some men and the latest incidents are reported to have happened on the 50 years of Independence Day celebrations.

Addressing journalists at parliament, Anywar said that three girls were raped on the night of Independence Day but no cases have been brought to court for mention despite arrests made a week ago.

She alleged that there are some nodding girls who are pregnant while three others recently gave birth but the fathers of these babies are not known to the parents.

Anywar added that the nodding disease victims lack food and asked government to give food to these families.

Anywar re-echoed her call to the government to intensify its campaign against nodding disease.

She said that there are recent cases of nodding disease that have been registered in Kitgum district.

He asked government to put more funds in research on nodding and if possible take some of the victims abroad for more research to be conducted.

Experts from center for disease control and world health organization have however have not yet come out with clear causes of the nodding disease.

Researchers from the Center for Disease Control, the Montpellier University Hospital in France, UK Department for International Development, UNICEF, and professors at Oregon health and Science University in US have agreed to work as a team in studying and unearthing the cause of nodding disease. The disease has killed over 1,000 children in Uganda, South Sudan and Tanzania.

Peter Spencer, a professor of neurology (School of Medicine) at Oregon Health and Science University in the US confirmed the development and said the new comprehensive study would involve examining the food, and drinks consumed by the nodding disease patients among others.

Spencer says that the researchers would also focus on establishing the environment in which the nodding disease viruses grow up and how effective the disease can be treated/ controlled.

The professor says that they want establish whether the syndrome is neurologic, psychiatric or both. He says that the victims who will be found to be having the neurologic type would be removed from epileptic drugs and a new type of treatment prescribed for them.

Phillip Gelisse, an expert in epilepsy at the Montpellier University Hospital in France says that the research will help the World Health Organisation (WHO) to understand the nodding disease.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has asked the women of Uganda to tie themselves on trees at the NGO Forum (Kabalagala) head offices in solidarity with the mothers who are caring for children with nodding disease.

The mysterious nodding disease invaded northern Uganda and it has already claimed several lives and dozens of others are admitted in hospitals in critical condition.

The FDC women leader Ingrid Turinawe says that the women should tie themselves as a symbol of the indignity women have had to face as they tie their nodding children to trees in Northern Uganda.

She says that even men are free to join the women in the campaign to untie Uganda from all the ills that have plagued our nation. “Come join us as we declare – no to indignity, to suffering, to corruption, to all the other things that we want to untie our country from. Come to the NGO Forum,” she says.
