The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has blamed Parliament which she chairs for passing three million nomination fees into law which she says blocked many leaders from competing for elective offices.

During the plenary session Kadaga who said she was not part of those who passed the decision said the three million was exorbitant and prohibitive and it does not reflect democracy. Kadaga noted that many Ugandans failed to raise the three million shillings and blamed the house for making it impossible to other Ugandans to access public offices.
The three million was later challenged in the courts of law; however  Justice Remmy Kasule in his ruling said that granting an interim injunction against the raise in nomination fees would stop the entire electoral process for President and Parliamentary elections.

The Government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa Sentamu said that the youth should stop complaining  about the increase in nomination fees for parliamentary and presidential seats, saying that it does not favour them financially.

Nankabirwa said that the youth and other people who can afford nomination fees should seek sponsorship from political parties of their choice and raise the required fee. She noted that as youth they should have individual friends who can sponsor them in situations where they do not have campaign money.

He defended government on the nomination fees for the parliamentary seats, saying that as executive they wanted one million shillings from 200.000 shillings but were over powered by parliament that and put the fee to 3 million shillings.

The NRM deputy spokesman Ofono Opondo revealed that the party’s Central Executive Committee has stayed the nomination fees charged by the party’s polls commission from all party members wishing to stand for any post.

Addressing journalists today, Opondo added that the party chairman has not stormed out of any CEC meeting as reported by various sections of the media. He also noted that the party does not bar any member from contesting as an independent in case they are defeated in the primaries and have not fully got satisfaction from the party’s mediation committee.

Opondo continued to distance the party from reports raised by party lawyers that the party chairman has rejected the fees and independents but the party calls for harmony among members.

Many party members wished to contest the fees set by the party for those wishing to contest for any post.
