Gender, labour and social development minister, Muluri Mukasa

The gender, labour and social development minister, Muruli Mukasa is advising parents to always take off time and speak to their children about the deadly HIV/AIDS disease if the country is to scale down on new infections among the adolescents.

Speaking at the opening of the stakeholders meeting, the minister reveals that adolescents are these days having the biggest numbers of people living with the disease as they are engaged in cross generation relationships coupled with networks which lead to the spread of the disease and its upon this time that parents have to talk to their children, mainly the girls, to protect themselves. He further calls for full implementation of the AIDS legislation saying this is one way in which the disease will be reduced from being negligently passed on to others.
This national stakeholder’s workshop has been organized to harmonize health, education, protection, and empowerment interventions that will better address the unique risks and vulnerabilities faced by adolescent girls, in a coordinated and coherent way.

BABY WALKERS: Many parents in Uganda, Africa, America, Asia, Latin America, and Europe use baby walkers in order to help their babies to walk fast.

However the latest research raises concerns about the walker. According to a United States of America (USA) based study; locomoto milestones and baby walkers cross section study, established that the use of baby walkers delays the child’s ability to walk independently by a few weeks.

The research reveals that walkers tend to have an abnormal gait at first, though it resolves with time. In addition, the walker increases the risk of injuries. The researchers so they advise parents and guardians to shun the use of baby walkers.

The state minister for Children and Youth affairs Ronald Kibuule has cautioned parents on possible crimes against children during the coming festive season.

Police statistics shows that during the Christmas long holiday children offenders take advantage of the negligence of some parents and care takers to abuse the children.

This month alone, 3 children have reportedly been ritually sacrificed in areas of Mityana and Jinja an incident worrying the public that the habit is up again.

Kibuule however says this can be avoided if parents and the public in general remain vigilant and report any suspicious characters in the community.

About 30 parents yesterday stormed Kawempe Muslim School demanding that students be sent on holiday.

This follows a fire that gutted an S.2 dormitory last night.

The parents say that the children are not safe and want them sent home until the situation normalises.

The parents were joined by students who continued to demand that all S.2 students be sent home.

However a meeting attended by the school management and parents, has resolved that only girls in S2 will be sent home until the situation stabilizes.

Last night’s fire came 2 days after the students demonstrated over what they described as poor diet, poor sanitation and unfair expulsion of their colleagues.

The school has closed and students sent home for holiday till further notice.

Many people in the world find it difficult to care for HIV-positive children. Some parents whom we interviewed for purposes of writing this story said that their children keeps on asking them why they give them medicine even when they are not sick.

Doctors tell us that the appetite for some of the children with HIV is low. Sometimes parents force their children to eat so that they don’t take medication on empty stomachs.”

The biggest worry of most parents is how to disclose to their children that they are HIV-positive. According to the statistics by the Ministry of Health in Uganda, about 20,000 to 24,000 children in the country are infected with HIV every year. The statistics further indicate that about 76,000 of Uganda children are in need of ARVs and about 24,417 children are already on treatment. In Uganda, every pregnant mother is screened for HIV. The doctors make sure that they find out whether she is HIV positive and if yes they study her CD4 count. HIV pregnant mothers are put on a preventive drug (prophylaxis) at 14 weeks to reduce the amount of virus in their blood.

During labour, an HIV pregnant woman on prophylaxis is given two more drugs, Niverapine and lamuvedine and after delivery, she is put on combivir (Lamivudne and zidovudine) for a week.

Her baby or babies are immediately put on Niverapine syrup until a week. The syrup helps the babies neutralise any virus that could have crossed to their bodies.

Dr. Michael Juma, who is the head of clinic paediatric HIV/AIDS at Baylor-Uganda, says that the baby is also put on Septrin to prevent bacterial infections, and if found positive, is started on ARVs.

It is now official, Ms Naluyange Jamila of DP belongs to Sheikh Ibrahim Kasozi of FDC. The arguably FDC’s richest youth has been in love with Naluyange (LC3 councilor at Lubaga division) on credit for a long time and the two opposition politicians even have two kids together.

And in a bid to legalise their love, Kasozi yesterday stormed Jamila’s parents’ home in Kabowa to make their love official. Kasozi was escorted by almost DP and FDC’s top leaders, artists’ friends and relatives.

We can only wish Kasozi and Naluyange a fruitful love and pray that let it be only death to separate the two apart.

Former Uganda Big Brother Africa finalist, Sharon Nalukenge has celebrated her controversial birthday at Club Rouge in Kampala .

We call it controversial because she claimed to be 23 years but she looks to be over 26 years. When Sharon was preparing to contest for Big Brother Africa, she announced that she was 25 years old and the people who were at the club got shocked when she finally told them that she was celebrating her 23rd birthday.

Her boyfriend Ronnie Mulindwa was present sweeping off rumours that she had separated with Mulindwa. Many people wished her many years of happy living.

Now it is almost a habit that celebrities hold birthday parties at Club Rouge. Next time we shall interview Nalukenge’s parents to establish her real age.
