Kampala Capital City Authority has refuted reports of plans to introduce new taxes.

This comes amid reports of a looming financial crisis at the authority requiring the introduction new taxes to fill the gap.

KCCA spokesperson Peter Kawuju says much as they have to hit the 75 billion annual revenue target, introducing new taxes is not one of the sought avenues to achieve this.

He says the authority is instead focusing on widening the tax base in Kampala rather than introducing new taxes.

The authority last year faced a shortage in its revenue collections of about 5 billion shillings and several activities were halted.

The political wing led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago had suggested a cut in the authority’s expenditure like slashing of staff salaries so as to contain the situation and also rejected any idea of introducing new taxes.

Kamuntu explains that they plan to put marks at all lake shores so that people know where to stop their cultivation and any kind of development.

He says they also plan to gazate breeding grounds for fish to increase its numbers.

Jinja Municipal council has stopped a proposal by Nile breweries limited to invest Sh2.5billion in the redevelopment of Source of the Nile River tourism site.

Nile breweries limited was set to start the redevelopment project in 2011 with a proposal to spend Sh500million per year for a period of five years.

Nile Breweries had asked that council only allows them to use the site for advertising its products after developing the site to international standards with modern structures and leisure parks.

However the Jinja mayor Muhammed Kezaala Baswale says council acted on orders of government which asked them to halt the project pending verification of the physical plan.

Ugandans who were displaced by the landslides in Bududa, eastern Uganda are to be resettled in an eco-village.

Sources in ministry of lands in Kampala says that the NRM government intends to permanently move the affected people from Bududa into highly developed settlement schemes where they would be provided with all the basic requirements in the beginning.

Sources told our informers that the integrated resettlement approach would involve the government to create townships with modern homes and schools but still in Bududa where the government thinks the landslides would not affect them anymore.

The eco village plan is different from the previous government plan where the government relocated some of the people to Kiryandongo in Masindi district. The sources told our informers that once the eco villages are formed it would be easier for the government to provide the people of Bududa with water and electricity.

The New Vision news paper of 2nd August this year 2012 published an interesting news story that former state minister for health, Mike Mukula has a list of 500 pledges by president Museveni to Eastern Uganda which the president has not been fulfilled since 1996!
The 500 unfulfilled pledges mean an average of about 75 lies (read unfulfilled pledges by president Museveni) per year over the last 16 years alone and that translates into nearly 5 lies per month on average to one region of Uganda alone! Responding to this news article, Kampala woman MP, Nabillah Sempala described Museveni as a consummate liar and a president who carries kiwani menu.
Nabillah urges the people of Teso to forget about Museveni’s pledges and mobilise their colleagues from the region in all political and social shades to do a regional development master plan. But Nabilla also wonders how people could believe in Museveni’s version of pledges yet he failed to fulfill his first plan of making a fundamental economical change in Uganda.

Cartier Women’s Initiative Award: The Cartier Women’s Initiative Award is an international business plan competition created Cartier, the Women’s Forum, McKinsey & Company and INSEAD business school to identify, support and encourage projects by women entrepreneurs.

Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards Mission:

  • To identify and support initial-phase women entrepreneurs through funding and coaching
  • To foster the spirit of enterprise by celebrating role models in entrepreneurship
  • To create an international network of women entrepreneurs and encourage peer networking

The Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards aim to encourage the most vulnerable category of entrepreneurs in their most vulnerable phase: women entrepreneurs starting up.

The annual competition involves two rounds:

Round 1 (in June): The Jury selects fifteen Finalists, the top three projects of each region (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America), on the basis of their short business plans.

They receive coaching from experienced businesspeople to move to the next round.

Round 2 (in October): The Finalists are invited to France for the final round of competition which includes submitting a detailed business plan and presenting their projects in front of the Jury.

They are also invited to the Annual Global Meeting of the Women’s Forum.

Based on the quality of the plan and the persuasiveness of the verbal presentation, one Laureate for each of the five regions is selected and receives a unique and comprehensive support package: US $ 20 000 of funding, one year of coaching, networking opportunities and media exposure.

The competition is designed to give all participants an opportunity to gain perspective and confidence by stimulating cross-cultural exchanges.

Intelligence briefing: Al Shabaab terrorists plan fatal attack on Uganda

Uganda’s intelligent network has got information that the Al Shabaab fighters are planning to use masked men and women to gun political and religious gatherings in Uganda. A source in state intelligence told our reporters that the fighters want to launch simultaneous attacks even on some of the police stations in Uganda but the security in Kampala is already on alert.

Uganda and other east African community states of Kenya and Tanzania have suffered a series of blasts from the Al shabaab terrorists over their support to the US government. The situation worsened after Uganda and Burundi sent troops to Somalia on a peace keeping mission to crush the Al Shabaab Islamic fighters whom the Barack Obama government in US calls terrorists. The suspected Al shabaab fighters also yesterday reportedly attacked the churches in Kenya and killed 17 Jesus’ followers and 45 others were wounded.

Uganda government is preparing to expand Entebbe International Airport due to increasing tourism revenue collection. Tourism is the second largest source of foreign exchange for Uganda after remittances from Ugandans working abroad. Uganda last expanded Entebbe airport 20 years ago.

The Transport and Works Minister, Eng. Abraham Byandala says the plans to expand Entebbe Airport are feasible because of the growth of the tourism industry in Uganda. Byandala says that the ministry is to expand Entebbe airport working on a strategic plan of five years.

The minister also says that Uganda will soon be making her own aviation fuel, and build large oil reserves and an aircraft maintenance center.  Dr. Rama Makuza, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Managing director, says Uganda plans to expand Entebbe airport’s car parking by making it storied and the number of aero plane hangars will be doubled from 11 to 22.
