Senior six examination results have been released in Kampala by education minister, Jesicca Alupo. According to the results, arts students have performed better than their science counterparts. But this is not good for a country with many redundant and jobless ‘artists’. What happened to the government policy of promoting sciences? Is it not working?

The Secretary of Uganda National Examination Board says that the performance in last year’s Ugandan Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) improved slightly with 99.3% of the candidates qualified for the UACE award compared to 99.2 per cent in 2011.

The best done subjects were History, Entrepreneurship, Geography, Literature, Chemistry and Biology. The candidates performed very poor in divinity, Islam, Math, Physics, economics and Agriculture.

The total number of S6 students who sat the exams was 111,456 compared to 103,760 candidates in 2011.

Striking is not good but the people in Kampala use it as a tool to force their oppressors to make changes in administration. Sources in police tell us that the police are working hard to kill the strike of the poor passengers in the bud.

According to police sources, the strike is a result of Thursday’s Uganda Revenue Authority’s (URA) act of impounding over 100 buses belonging to Pioneer Easy Bus Company for failure to clear a sh8b tax debt. The passengers who talked to our reporters in Kampala blamed URA for impounding the busses yet they have been helping poor people.

The Pioneer bus company started its operations on March 12, taking advantage of a taxi operators strike over payment of 120, 000 shillings per month.

The manager in charge of debt collection in URA, Abdul Salaam says that they impounded the busses because Pioneer Bus Company had refused to pay taxes despite persistent reminders.

It now looks that Uganda markets are like a dumping area for all poor quality products from China and other countries in Europe, America.

We are told that Uganda’s markets are flooded by fake HIV Home Kits for Self HIV Testing. Sources in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) told us that these fake HIV testing Kits are imported from Chine and also India.

They are sold for only 3,000 Uganda shillings (about £0.80 pence). The minister for trade in Uganda government, Madam Amelia Kyambade urges Ugandans to visit proper HIV/AIDS Blood Testing Centres the government established in different parts of Uganda than relying on fake HIV testing kits sold in Kampala.

The minister says that whoever buys these HIV kits is risking his or her life and the lives of loved ones alike. The kits are suspected to be causing cancer once one uses them.

The high failure rate recorded in 2012 UCE exams has been blamed on commercialization of education.

Democratic Party secretary general Matthias says that most schools no longer put emphasis on academics but rather on money.

He says that due to commercialization even people who should be in charge of supervising these schools have resorted to opening their own schools thus affecting their monitoring role.
He said that government should come up with a policy that bars officials in the ministry of education from acquiring schools and stopping teachers from engaging in part time work.

Yesterday UNEB released the 2012 Uganda Certificate of Education results indicating a slight decline in performance compared to 2011.
Out of 262,987 candidates who sat for the exams 18,826 passed in division one which is 7.2 % compared to 22,630 which is 8.5 in 2011.

About 30 parents yesterday stormed Kawempe Muslim School demanding that students be sent on holiday.

This follows a fire that gutted an S.2 dormitory last night.

The parents say that the children are not safe and want them sent home until the situation normalises.

The parents were joined by students who continued to demand that all S.2 students be sent home.

However a meeting attended by the school management and parents, has resolved that only girls in S2 will be sent home until the situation stabilizes.

Last night’s fire came 2 days after the students demonstrated over what they described as poor diet, poor sanitation and unfair expulsion of their colleagues.

The school has closed and students sent home for holiday till further notice.

Members of Parliament have demanded government provides personal security after Buyaga west county Member of Parliament Barnabas Tinkasiimire family and home was set on fire by unidentified people on Monday this week in mukono.

Mps expressed fears that if government does not provide them with security they will be useless in parliament saying they fear handling sensitive issues like fighting corruption.

MPs Theodore Sekikubo and Medard Bitekyerezo said that Tinkansimiire had reported the threats to police earlier but police did not respond, something which may scare MPs from talking for their voters in parliament for fear of their lives.

Mps including Winnie Kiiza, Prof.Gilbert Bukenya and Mathias Nsubuga Birekerawo said that incidents of setting fire on houses and murder are on increase but government response is slow.

The MPs cited such incidents in Kasese, Kyanamukaka (Lwengo) and Kakiri(wakiso) where over 11 lives have been lost in less than a month .

Some members of Parliament also blamed police of being reluctant despite members reporting threats received from anonymous callers.

MPs, Peter Ogwang, Beatrice Anywar among told parliament that they have ever got threatening messages from anonymous people and reported to police for security but police asked them to provide accommodation for police guards, which to them is an extra cost they cannot meet.

The minister for internal Affairs Hillary Onek also said that he has on several occasions been trailed by unknown people which forced him to seek beef up his security. He promised to follow-up on the mps concerns and carryout investigations and punish culprits according to the law.

He however said that police is facing the challenge of man power with only 43,000 thousand out of 65,000 required.

Col. Kiiza Besigye, the president general of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has tongue lashed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) describing it as a party for grabbers.

He says that the use of the word grab in relationship to NRM and its top dogs (managers) is no longer surprising to the people of Uganda.

Col. Besigye says that people in NRM grab land from peasants, grab money from the poor, grab donor funds, ‘grab votes.’ Speaking to FDC supporters in Busia, Besigye said that due to corruption in NRM, even women’s body parts may not be safe. This statement caused laughter in the audience.

“Ask the people of Teso or Kitgum where their cattle went and who took it. They will tell you it was grabbed,” he says.
