Makerere University vice chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has challenged the sacked staff to follow the right University protocol in following up with their case.

This comes a day after Parliament through the office of the Speaker on Wednesday received the petition from a section of staff requesting the house to set up a committee to investigate matter.

However, Nawangwe said the university tribunal was established by the University council and therefore only receives orders from the University and not Hon.Rebecca Kadaga.

“The staff who petitioned Parliament should have first read the university regulations that govern them. It was not right for the staff to run to parliament because they were supposed to first petition their staff tribunal which was established by the University Council instead of running to the Speaker of Parliament who is ever busy. Ruining to the Speaker instead of the university tribunal is part of the indiscipline I am talking about so this must end,” Prof Nawangwe said.

The professor also said the administration is ready to defend their stand even before the parliament.

Makerere University on December 22, 2018 sacked 45 staff over various reasons ranging from absconding from work, indiscipline, assault and financial fraud to insubordination, among others.

Makerere University Student’s Guild leadership has rejected a 91% tuition fees increment for science courses as proposed by the University Council.

This is after the student’s guild formed a committee to study the issue of tuition increment after council proposing a 91% tuition increment on given Science courses and a 45% increment on Arts courses respectively.

While handing over the report to the chair University council, the chairperson student’s committee Polly Bandola said that instead of increasing tuition by that percentage, it should only be increased by 15% for all courses.

According to the earlier proposed increments, Bachelor of Journalism and Communication was among those whose fees were hiked from Shs 980, 000 to Shs 1.2 million.

Other courses include; Bachelor of Pharmacy from Shs 1.3 million to Shs 2 million as well as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Shs 1.34 million to Shs 2 million.

Bandola added that the increment should affect only the new students and not the continuing ones.

For his part, the university Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe commended the students for their input into the tuition increment proposal promising that council will look into the matter.
