Oak International Human Rights Fellowship: The Oak Institute for the Study of International Human Rights was established in 1998 by a generous grant from the Oak Foundation.

Each year, it hosts an Oak Human Rights Fellow to teach and conduct research while residing at the College.

The Institute organizes lectures and other events centered around the fellow’s area of expertise.

The purpose of the fellowship is to offer an opportunity for one prominent practitioner in international human rights to take a sabbatical leave from front-line work to spend the fall semester (September-December) in residence at Colby.

This provides the Fellow time for respite, reflection, research, and writing.

While all human rights practitioners are eligible, we especially encourage applications from those who are currently or were recently involved in “on-the-ground” work at some level of personal risk.

Following the period of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to return home to continue her/his human rights work.

The Oak Institute seeks one frontline human rights practitioner outside of the United States for residence at Colby.

Possible areas of human rights work on behalf of those incarcerated may include, but are not limited to:

  • living standards and health care in prisons, pretrial detention
  • illegal imprisonment
  • detained non-citizens
  • the right of legal representation
  • juvenile detention
  • education and practical training for inmates
  • post-detention rehabilitation
  • families of inmates
  • disciplinary procedures
  • prison privatization
  • gender and racial discrimination in incarceration
  • political prisoners, prisoners of war, torture, sexual abuse, brutality, and the death penalty.

Application Deadline: 15th December.

Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has reportedly recruited youth with a purpose of burning markets, parishes of kingdoms and other places of public interest.

The security agencies also allege that FDC has recruited youth who are undergoing a military training in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The aim of the garrison being trained in DRC is to over throw president Museveni’s government.

Security minister Muluri Mukasa says that the security network has continued to receive intelligence reports indicating that FDC has been and is still nursing plans of over throwing Kampala government by use of arms and to burn markets.

Currently the government is holding several people in connection with plans to form rebel groups that will fight to over throw NRM government.   However Judith Akello, the MP for Agago says that FDC is a political party in Uganda which doesn’t believe in violence as a means to change government.

The members of opposition are complaining that the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has created a ‘stone throwing group’ with a purpose of discrediting the rallies of action for change (A4C).

The coordinator of A4C Mathias Mpuuga says that the group is planted in opposition to throw stones at the police such that the force gets a chance to ban the A4C rallies.

The police last week warned to ban A4C rallies on grounds that the leaders of A4C have failed to control their members from being violent.

The Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura last week warned A4C to stop holding rallies without police permission. However Mathias Mpuuga says the government created the stone throwing group to discredit opposition.

Mpuuga says that the government and the Police own these stone-throwing men who disguise as opposition activists and throw stones at police and innocent citizens.
