MP Gerald Karuhanga campaigning for restoration of term limits

Otafire’s remarks come at a time when a section of members of parliament and civil society organizations are pushing for the restoration of the presidential term limits.

Otafire says Uganda has a number of problems which cannot be solved by simply restoring presidential term limits.

He says if the public was not interested in the current regime it would have not voted the NRM in power for the fourth time.

Members of Parliament and former mps who were in the seventh parliament have regretted having removed the presidential term limits.

Addressing a joint press conference with mps and civil society organizations at hotel Africana in Kampala, they said presidential term limits should be reinstated.

MPs Godfrey kiwanda, felix okot , Wilfred Niwagaba and former MPs Mary mugyenyi and Miria Matembe said that presidential term limits should be restored as the country marks 50 years of independence to recommit Ugandans to reconstruct the building blocks for peaceful transition of power from one president to another.

Mityna north member of parliament Godfrey Kiwanda has apologized to Ugandans for having part of the group of Mps in the 7th parliament that removed presidential term limit in the constitution.

Godfrey kiwanda said that he regrets the removal of term limits and he said that he is now in full support to restore the presidential term limits.

He said that supporting presidential term limit restoration does not mean that he is against president Museveni or the his party, the NRM.

He said that the current political tension in the country is because of the removal of the presidential term limit in the constitution.

Kiwanda says that he had supported the term limit with the view that president Museveni was not like other African leaders who cling on power.

The youth member of parliament for Western Region Gerald karuhanga said that Ugandans and investors have fled the country to invest in their business in other countries because is not certain of the political future of Uganda.

Karuhanga revealed that president museveni intends to push for amendment of the constitution to remove age limit for president so as he stands for presidency in case he makes 75 years.

The member of parliament for Dokolo county Felix Okot Ogong said that MPs in support of presidential term limit will soon move a motion in parliament before the end of this year to push for the restoration presidential term limit.

The presidential term limit was put in the constitution by the constituency Assembly seventeen years ago and on 30th September 2005 the seventh parliament removed the term limit.

We have learnt with great shock that load shedding in most parts of Kampala and Wakiso district including Entebbe Municipality is to continue because ‘Mutundwe power station is under restoration.

The power station burnt last night under unknown circumstances. Currently most parts of Kampala and Wakiso are in too much darkness unlike before. UMEME in what looks like a bid to curb power demonstrations around the city has sent sms messages to all its customers informing them about the problems the company is experiencing.

The message was from 0800185185. The message indicated that UMEME was doing whatever is possible to restore order. The energy minister, Simon D’ujunga however yesterday told the press that his ministry is about to completely end load shedding.
