Bobi Wine was welcomed with praises by prison inmates as they sung his freedom tunes to and fro the Buganda Road court.

Grade One magistrate Esther Nahirya, read Kyagulanyi’s cases where he is of holding a public meeting (anti-social media tax demo) on July 11, 2018 without notifying police contrary to provisions of the Public Order Management Act (POMA) and also failed to cooperate with police to ensure that all demonstrators are unarmed.

Singer Hillary Kiyaga popularly known as Dr. Hiderman has welcomed a new baby boy in his family and named him after Kyaddondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine

Hilderman is very close to Bobi Wine, and says he named his son after the Kyadondo East legislator because he wants the new born to be as courageous as Bobi Wine.

The “Abite Ebikutte” singer is expected to contest against Amelia Kyambade, his role model in 2021 as Mawokota North Member of Parliament. This explains why the singer named the son Wokota from Mawokota of Mpigi District

According to Hilderman, Kyambadde who he strongly campaigned for and even sang a song (Amelia) for has been a great disappointment to the constituency.

Kenyans joined to Ugandans in protesting against the brutal arrest and detention of MP Robert Kyagulangi commonly known as Bobi Wine who was to appear before the court martial on Thursday 23rd August 2018.

These protests started on social media platforms especially twitter on which Kenyans advised Ugandans to stop being timid by letting the law enforcers bully them.

Kenyans today brought the protests to the streets of Nairobi headed by The Law Society of Kenya, Amnesty International, Ugandans living in Kenya and student leaders who gathered at the Freedom Corner in Nairobi and marched to the Ugandan embassy on Riverside Drive.

This happened at the same time as the court session by the court martial in Gulu where the state withdrew the charges against Bobi Wine on account that it is injustice for him to be charged in an army court and that he should be charged together with the other suspects in a civilian court.

On being released, the protestors in Kenya changed their chants from “Free Bobi Wine” to “Free Uganda”.

Bobi wine was however rearrested by police and taken to Gulu majesty court where he was remanded until 30th August 2018 when he will be appearing in court together with the others who were arrested.

President Museveni yesterday released a statement condemning in the strongest terms the shooting and beating of civilians by the Police.

The president questioned as to why police fired tear gas and live bullets during the Monday demonstrations that saw the rioters, section of the public, and journalists brutally beaten and arrested.

“Youth groups of Monday were more of a nuisance and psychological warfare than a menace, unless I get new facts. Why then, shoot at them, why fire tear-gas, why fire bullets?” he wondered advising the Police to use other means.

“Those mobile, tyre burning groups, who are not attacking anybody, should simply be chased on foot, identified from light helicopters (206- Agusto type) or UAUs, arrested and be charged with appropriate offences,” he continued.

In the same statement, Museveni condemned beating up of journalists and advised the police to rather arrest and charge them lawfully in case of disobedience. He informed the security forces that they don’t have the power to beat up people.

“I condemn, again, in the strongest terms the beating of journalists by elements of the security forces. It is true that the journalists working for foreign interests or for our own local parasites tell lies, they do not do balanced reporting,”

“On account of that you can block them because sometimes they interfere with the scene of crime. If they refuse, you arrest them and charge them with disobeying lawful command

“Beating is wrong because the Security forces do not have that power. People should not be beaten even as a punishment. They can be imprisoned, fined, or hanged according to the law,” he advised.

This follows the recent riots and wave of demonstrations that have arisen from the brutal arrest of four MPs and over 30 other civilians on the eve of the ARUA municipality by-election. The MPs include MP Robert Kyagulanyi commonly known as Bobi Wine, Kasiano Wadri who won the by-election, Gerald Karuhanga and Francis Zaake whose where abouts have been unknown until of recent when he was “dumped” at Rubaga hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Kyadondo East Legislator Bobi Wine in busy campaigns with Independent candidate Kassiano Wadrid in Arua for the by-election

The  West Nile region police spokesperson, Ms Josephine Angucia, claimed that AK-47 guns, a pistol, 15 phones, six red T-shirts, 46 white tablets in a tin labelled extra were recovered during a security search at Pacific Hotel in Arua Town where Bobi Wine and other opposition MPs were staying for the campaigns for Arua Municipality parliamentary by-election.

“While searching the rooms of Kyagulanyi at around midday on Tuesday, the security team found a small bag containing 15 phones, a GPS reader, SMG rifles, six red T-shirts and other items. Kassiano Wadri was also arrested and found with a pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition,” Ms Angucia said.

However, according to Mr Luiji Candia, the owner of Pacific Hotel, the security personnel looted all rooms, stole money, laptops of guests and many other valuables.

“These people (security operatives) did not get any gun here. They should be ashamed of telling lies to the public that they got guns here. If they got the guns from somewhere, they should tell the public instead of blaming our hotel,” Mr Candia said.

According to Gen Ali, Kyagulanyi is at Gulu hospital where he is receiving treatment. Other 3 MPs will appear before the Chief Magistrate tomorrow in Gulu and over 33 people were arrested.

Following yesterday’s shooting of Robert Kyagulanyi’s driver, Yasin Kawuma, motormouth Tamale Mirundi has come out to give his two cents on the incident saying criminal gangs have infiltrated Bobi Wine’s circles.

According to Mirundi, Ugandans should first understand that it’s criminal to raise your hand up while holding a stone when the presidential convoy is passing.

He further states that Bobi Wine’s ‘People Power’ circles have been permeated by criminal gangs who are only experts in causing chaos.

Mirundi then heaved in former FDC president, Dr. Kiiza Besigye, saying he has handed his “hooligans” to the Kyadondo East legislator.

“Bobi Wine has inherited Besigye’s hooliganism groups of unemployed Baganda youths. It is evident that the so far registered death in Arua is of a Muganda man,” Mirundi alleged.

Over 34 people have been arrested including journalists. The whereabouts of Bobi Wine together with fellow MPs are yet to be known.

A new amendment of the excise duty tax bill on taxes imposed on both social and mobile money is due next week in parliament following protests from the public as tear gas and live bullets  rocked Kampala.

Journalists, artists, business men, students and other activists raided the streets of Kampala yesterday dressed in red protesting against the taxes imposed on social media and mobile money amidst live bullets and teargas from the police.

Hon Robert Kyagulanyi, leads activists during a demonstration against new taxes

These taxes which were imposed effective 1st July have been always criticized by the public. The concerns were followed by a release of a statement from President Museveni which he shared via social media in which he said, “The 1% was a miscommunication. The actual figure was 0.5%, half of one percent.” This was to apply on mobile money taxes. He rather referred to social media as a “luxury.”

Prime Minister Rugunda told parliament that government’s decision will be communicated in 7 days. File photo

The demonstration was followed by, a session of the parliament which resumed from its 3 weeks recess period. The Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda announced plans by government to propose an amendment to the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act 2018, “Government is now reviewing the taxes, taking into account the concern of the public,” said Rugunda.

Speaker Kadagga directed Finance Minister Matia Kasaija to apologize to parliament as he was   reluctant to consider business from his Ministry. The speaker also tasked the Prime Minister to explain whether Ugandans will keep paying the taxes during the 7 days period.

MP Cecilia Ogwal inquired about the money that had been; “May we know where the money is being kept and how much has been collected so far…you must return the money that has been collected from the people,” Other MPs like Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi want the entire act to be scrapped off.
