Human Rights activist Robert Mugumya petitions parliament asking that it endorses comprehensive structural reforms in the country’s health care system.

The petition he handed over to the speaker today points to a number of concerns including inadequate funding to the health sector, poor remuneration to medical workers and commercialization of health services in government hospitals to the detriment of poor Ugandans.

He notes that an obvious government’s insensitivity to medical workers’ plight has led to deterioration of public health value in the country.

Mugumya is also complaining of the failure by the health ministry to adequately and effectively provide reproductive health services to women and failure by the ministry to consult health services users so as to make informed decisions.

He wants the ministry to urgently restructure administration department in all government hospitals and to establish Service Standards.

Mugumya stresses that the state is obligated to take all practical measures to ensure the provision of basic medical services to its population.
