We are told that a group of about 17 US commandos from the CIA and FBI have been sent to Uganda to boost UPDF’s ability in using satellite imaging to track down the movements of the reminants of LRA rebels who are led by Joseph Kony.

The first contingent of US commandos was sent to Uganda to do the same in October and the latest arrived on December 4.

The US commandos are expected to help UPFD and other armies in the Great Lakes region to track down Kony and his rebels.

The LRA leaders including Kony are needed by the international criminal court over abuse of human rights and displacing thousands of people in northern Uganda from their houses. A source in the government which gave us this tip declined to tell when the commandos would get back to US or about when the regional army with the help of America will capture Kony.

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, University of Hawaii, USA 2011

Study Subject(s):Climate Research
Course Level:Postdoctoral
Scholarship Provider: University of Hawaii
Scholarship can be taken at: USA

Eligibility:
Ph.D. with a background in using remotely sensed data for vegetation ecological, ecosystem, or climate studies. Excellent oral/written communication skills. Experience in conducting field work involving remote sensing. Experience in programming (e.g. C, Fortran, Matlab, etc.). Experience in working with a Unix/Linux environment.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, University of Hawaii at Manoa, seeks a recent Ph.D. interested in generating climate research-quality satellite data records of global vegetation indices. Develop and evaluate a methodology of relating/coupling satellite data with in situ tower-based measurements of flux and reflectance to validate vegetatation index products from multiple sensors (VIIRS, MODIS, AND AVHRR), including the performance and effectiveness of algorithmic improvements and multi-sensor continuity/compatability, and to establish their biophysical uncertainties. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build research capacities in ecological remote sensing, scaling, and phenology studies. Major challenges will be to efficiently handle a wide vareity of datasets and to develop sound relationships with the external data providers required for the project.

How to Apply: Post

Scholarship Application Deadline: Continuous – application review begins November 16, 2011
