The Save the Children in Uganda’s regional manager Lhibuma Muhindo said yesterday that children in Uganda have failed to enjoy their rights because the local governments have not dug deep in sensitizing communities.

Lhibuma said that it is better children use the celebrations to mark the Day of the African child slated for today by putting local leaders to task on why their day has been undermined on the calendar.

Children from Kasese, Kabarole, Bundibugyo and Ntoroko districts will gather at Suura Primary school, Katebwa sub-county in Kabarole district to celebrate the Day of the African Child, commemorating the deaths of hundreds of children killed on the streets of Soweto in South Africa in 1976 as they asked for the right to education.

Speaking about the theme of the celebrations; all together for actions in
favour of Street Children”, Lhibuma castigated district local governments for failure to organize such function annually.

The Kasese district senior community development officer Zerubaberi Thembo said the district will now pick a leaf from the upcoming event organized by Save the Children to start marking it annually.

Save the Children in Uganda has urged African leaders to recruit, train and retain more doctors, nurses and Midwives to help reduce the gap of 800,000 health workers in Africa by 2015.

This comes amidst various calls that have been leveled out to the various leaders to ensure that by 2015 the African countries have increased their health budget funding to at least 15% despite that most of the African countries are not on course to achieve this commitment in relation to the health budgets they made in the Abuja declaration in 2001.

The Africa Advocacy Advisor of the organization, Chikenzie Anyanwu has said in press statement that it is very disheartening to hear that Africa which is home to about 12% of the world’s population has only 3% of the world’s health workers.

Anyanwu says it is also disheartening because Africa bears the biggest of the disease burden of the world with such a small number of health workers.

He says the African leaders should therefore seriously work on reducing this gap of health workers in the continent if it is to achieve the end of remarkably improving the standards of health on the continent.

maternal mortality report by UNICEF

Save the Children in Uganda an international child rights Non Governmental Organization has that the greatest decline in levels of maternal mortality around Africa occurred in countries with a high political commitment towards the fight against maternal mortality.

Some of the countries that registered a remarkable improvement in reducing the rates of maternal mortality include Malawi with a 39% reduction, Mauritius and Uganda with 38% reduction and Tanzania that registered a 37% reduction.

In their publication Making a Difference, Save the Children in Uganda says all the above countries registered a remarkable improvement in reducing the levels of maternal mortality because there was seen to have been political commitment to fight maternal mortality which was supplemented with other positive factors like women empowerment, and a functioning health system with a high level of skilled attendance.

Save the Children in Uganda says it is delighted that despite that so many countries have still failed to attain remarkable improvements in reducing the rates of maternal mortality in such various countries at least it is encouraging that some countries in Africa have managed to remarkably reduce maternal mortality.

About 250 youths from Luwero have benefited from Youth Saving Clubs that Save the Children started in the district in 2008.

The project aimed at developing the potential of young people age of 13-20 years of age to manage their financial resources effectively has improved financial literacy and enhanced savings of the youth in

Luwero.

The Chairperson of Ristaka High School Youth Savings Club says for the period he has been part of the club he has managed to pay his school fees for the whole of about 300,000 buy stationery and a few text books.

The Project Coordinator of Save the Children in Uganda, Julie Bayiga says the primary objective of the project is to link financial education with practical learning experience such that young people can be helped to build financial assets for their own.
