Special PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries: With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University is able to finance doctoral scholarships for candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a PhD at Ghent University.

No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development.

Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors.

There are two types of scholarships: full grants for starting PhD students and grants with a maximum duration of 1 year for students finalizing their PhD research at Ghent University.

Before applying for this grant candidates have to find a ‘promoter’ (professor from Ghent University who will act as personal supervisor of the doctoral research) who agrees to support their application.

The value of the scholarship depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation.

The monthly allowance is approx. € 1,700.

Doctoral Scholarships for Developing Countries: As one of its contributions to development co-operation, K.U.Leuven offers each academic year scholarships to deserving students from developing countries to do their PhD in the largest university in Flanders, Belgium.

Also commonly referred to as the IRO scholarships (IRO in Dutch stands for Interfacultaire Raad voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking), this scholarship programme has supported more than sixty PhD graduates over the past five years.

Essential to the application for the IRO scholarship and to completing a doctoral programme successfully is the choice of a good doctoral research topic and supervisor.

New applicants are now provided two alternatives: either by selecting amongst the priority research fields offered by the doctoral schools or by submitting their own personal research proposal.

K.U.Leuven, which is situated at about 20 kilometers from Brussels, the capital of both Belgium and Europe, is the oldest university of the Low Countries.

As such, it has a long-standing tradition of hospitality towards students and scholars from abroad.

At present, almost 4,000 international students (about 10% of the total number of students at K.U.Leuven) have found their home away from home in Leuven.

The scholarships are only granted for doctoral or pre-doctoral programmes. Scholarships for a pre-doctoral programme are awarded for only one year.

The scholarship may be converted into a scholarship for doctoral studies, thus extended for 4 more years, on the condition that you pass the pre-doctoral programme with distinction and are admitted to the doctoral programme.

The maximum period for which you may be awarded a scholarship is thus 5 years: 1 pre-doctoral year and 4 doctoral years.

The scholarship is renewable each year and its renewal depends on the annual evaluation by your supervisor.

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants.

All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

The target group for master programmes comprises students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

Although these programmes are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.

Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. The academic admission requirements are specific to every programme. Please peruse the requirements from the relevant programme.

A joint selection committee of VLIR-UOS and the host university is responsible for selecting scholarships. The host university – not the applicant – forwards the scholarship applications to the VLIR-UOS secretariat if the academic admission requirements are met. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria relate to the qualifications required of all scholarship applicants and selection criteria evaluated by the selection committee. Download the VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria at the bottom of this page.

Launched in January 1999 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires Etrangères), the Eiffel Scholarship is designed to bolster international recruiting by French schools of higher education, at a time when competition to attract top foreign students is growing among developed countries.

HEC reserves the right to submit only those candidates it feels best qualify for the Eiffel Scholarship as the award is particularly competitive and prestigious. Note that applications from students currently studying outside France will be given priority over those from students already studying in France.

Eligibility:

The HEC MBA Program applies on behalf of admitted eligible students. In order to be eligible the candidate must be:

  • Be aged 30 years old or less in the selection year
  • Have a single nationality from a developing country deemed an ‘emerging country’ by the French state department, especially those in Asia and Latin America, for example, currently under-represented among the student population in France

Selection Criteria:

Candidates wishing to apply for the Eiffel Scholarship must write an essay, describing how the scholarship will help them achieve their long-term career goals. They should explain what they aim to achieve from the MBA program and how they will implement this in their future career. As it is offered by the French Government, candidates should address issues such as why they are studying in France.

Personal Financial Statement:

Applicants must submit a detailed description of their financial circumstances as well as a cash-flow forecast for 16-month duration at HEC.

Amount of Award:

The Eiffel Scholarship provides participants with a monthly allowance of €1,031, and covers additional expenses including travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Tuition fees are not covered by the scholarship.

Application Deadline:

End of November each year (after enrollment confirmation).
