Serena Williams has only been back to playing tennis for five months after taking over a year off from the women’s tour due to pregnancy and maternity leave, but she’s as impressive as ever. The US Open this year will be huge even for Williams as she chases her 24th Grand Slam, which would tie Margaret Court’s record for the most ever. Last month, she was a runner-up at Wimbledon, losing to Angelique Kerber in straight sets after a remarkable run.

Williams is appearing on the cover of Time magazine this week as she prepares to go for No. 24 again

Williams is appearing on the cover of Time magazine this week as she prepares to go for No. 24 again, but as always for Williams, the message is bigger than tennis. Williams, who suffered some major trauma after giving birth last September, hasn’t been shy in discussing her battle with postpartum depression. In her interview with Time, she discussed the balance between being a mother and being a tennis legend whose journey is ongoing.

Williams, who said after losing to Kerber that she was playing for all of the moms, reiterated that in her interview.

“I dedicated that to all the moms out there who’ve been through a lot,” she said during the interview. “Some days, I cry. I’m really sad. I’ve had meltdowns. It’s been a really tough 11 months. If I can do it, you guys can do it too.”

Williams, however, still has unfinished business with tennis. “I’m not done yet, simple,” she said. “My story doesn’t end here.”

Williams isn’t chasing her 24th major, she’s chasing No. 25, as she said in January. She wants to be the undisputed best to ever pick up a racket. But she said that tennis sometimes has to take a backseat.

“I still have to learn a balance of being there for her, and being there for me,” she said of her infant daughter. “I’m working on it. I never understood women before, when they put themselves in second or third place. And it’s so easy to do. It’s so easy to do.”

Williams will begin her chase of Court’s record again on Aug. 27. She’ll undoubtedly have to run through a gauntlet to get there. Between Kerber, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and even Maria Sharapova, the field is as competitive as it’s ever been. Williams has already proven to everyone that she can win — she’s 9-2 in major play since her return — but she’s looking to close the deal at a major for the first time since January 2017.

She will head to the US Open next month aiming to complete the first calendar year Grand Slam of her career.

Muguruza was playing in her first Grand Slam final and took a 4-2 lead, before giving the top seed  immense panic by fighting back from a set and 5-1 down with two breaks of serve.

“There was definitely pressure towards the end,” said Williams, who also completed the ‘Serena Slam’ in 2003.

“Garbine started playing really well and I just had to think to stay out there and work really hard.

“I am having so much fun out on the court. Everyday is a pleasure to be playing and winning Wimbledon.”

A victory in New York would see the world number one match Steffi Graf’s calendar Slam of 1988, and tie the German’s open era record of 22 major wins.

Second seed Roger Federer beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-2 6-3 to book a place in the last eight at Wimbledon.

Seven-time champion Federer now needs one more title to break the record he holds with Pete Sampras and Willie Renshaw.

The Swiss did not buy much into his win insisting that it was his opponent who was not at his best.

“I don’t think I made a statement,” said Federer. “I did a nice job making the transition.

“It was a good match. I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Obviously maybe Roberto wasn’t at his very best.”

Federer will next face Gilles Simon for a place in the semi-finals.

In the other games, Swiss fourth seed and French Open champion Stan Wawrinka won 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 to set up a last-eight tie with Richard Gasquet. France’s Gilles Simon knocked out World number six Tomas Berdych in straight sets while Canadian Vasek Pospisil fought back to beat Viktor Troicki of Serbia 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-3 6-3.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic also fought back from two sets down to level his match against Kevin Anderson before bad light stopped play at Wimbledon.

Play stopped at 21:03 British Standard Time (BST) and will resume for the deciding set on today.

Williams who is ranked number one, needed two hours and one minute to win.

Safarova, playing her first Grand Slam final, led by a break in the decider but Williams won the last six games.

The 33-year-old becomes the third player – male or female – to win 20 major singles titles.

Only Germany’s Steffi Graf on 22 has won more since the open era began in 1968, with Australia’s Margaret Court collecting 24 between 1960 and 1973.

Williams now holds three of the four major titles and is on course can of completing the set at Wimbledon, having managed the feat already in 2003.

The world number one was so pleased to win the trophy, she said;

“It makes this trophy really special,” she added “I really wanted it. I wanted to win so bad.

“I just felt like I had every opportunity in this match. Being down from the second, third, fourth round, it wasn’t very easy, so I probably topped for my most difficult time to win.

“But it also makes me feel good that I was able to be fit and be able to win the event. I can’t believe I won, but it’s cool.”

Safarova said: “I’m proud that I fought back in the second set, because it was looking like it will be an easy match.

“Serena was really strong out there. I just pushed myself to step up the level.”

The American suffered with sickness throughout the event and she even feared she was too ill to play 48 hours prior to the final.

“It’s been a nightmare 48 hours,” said the world number one. “I kind of was in the locker room just laying down after my semi-final.”

She added: “I even told the physio, ‘I’m not sure I’m going to be able to play, because this is just not looking good.’ I actually was really bad last night.”And then they helped me out.”

Meanwhile Serena Williams increased her margin at the top of the women’s rankings.
The 33-year-old American’s nearest rival is Czech Petra Kvitova, who has risen from fourth.
