It seems opening law firms works to many politicians. The latest news reports from the office of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) indicates that their party president who is also former MP for Makindye East, Hon. Michael Mabikke has opened his own law firm in Kampala.

We have been told that Michael Mabikke’s law firm has been named KAM and company Advocates located on the 1st floor of Kisozi complex in Nakasero, Kampala Central Division.

The building houses many other firms including Bitangaro and Company Advocates and Mukiibi and Company Advocates. Mabikke’s first degree was in Social Science but when he joined the 7th and 8th Parliament he successfully studied law.

So whoever knows Michael Mabikke the social scientist don’t raise eyebrows when you read about council Mabikke. He is the one you know about!

Two political leaders, Michael Mabikke and Dr. Abed Bwanika have opposed the MPs move to impeach President Museveni.

The MPs’ proposal to impeach Museveni is being driven by MP Odonga Otto (Aruu) and Ken John Lukyamuzi of Lubaga South. Abed Bwanika and Mabikke say that the MPs who plan to impeach Museveni are in day dreams since NRM has majority MPs in the house.

Mabikke says that opposition members have no capacity to impeach Museveni since they have few numbers in the house. Mabikke says that the MPs should concentrate on developmental issues than dreaming to impeach Museveni.

MPs Lukyamuzi and Otto want to impeach Museveni over allegations of causing financial lose to the government in the compensation saga to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba and purchase of fighter jets. Mabikke is the president General of the Social Democratic Party while Bwanika is the president of the Peoples’ Developmental Party.

The funders of Uganda’s opposition parties from Europe have today held closed door meeting with the leaders of Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Social Democratic Party and Democratic Party (DP).

The meeting we are told took place in Kasangati in the home of Col. Kiiza Besigye of FDC. In attendance was UPC President, Dr. Olara Otunnu, Social Democratic Party president Michael Mabikke, DP representatives and Col. Besigye himself was present.

The donors asked Besigye and other opposition leaders who were in the meeting why they don’t unit to form a one party opposition force to oust president Museveni. Otunnu, and the DP officials deliberated on the issue.

In the meeting, DP, UPC and SDP declined to form a joint opposition party. But they agreed to work together in the struggle to oust Museveni. From the meeting, Besigye and group went to Namasuba Kalina zone for a joint rally.

We have heard that former Makindye East MP, Michael Mabikke has completely cut close ties with FDC because he is uncomfortable with the way FDC relates with other parties. To put it bluntly Mabikke is quitting the whole IPC coalition which brings together FDC, CP, Jeema and Suubi, a political pressure group.

A source in Mabikke’s party, the Social Democratic Party tell us that Mabikke is bitter because all members of opposition parties are being harassed by the ruling government but when FDC leaders go to human rights organisations, they report there that the government is harassing their supporters without specifying that even SDP supporters are harassed.

We hear that Mabikke wants SPD to start his own pressure on government such that he too can go to donors and tell them that his supporters are being persecuted like the way Col. Kiiza Besigye reportedly does to get donor funding.

When contacted Mabikke explained that SDP is an independent party and it is free to carry out its activities without leaning on FDC.

The Social Democratic Party has today joined the Inter party Coalition, a group of leading opposition political parties aimed at giving a joint challenge to President Yoweri Museveni’s National Resistance Movement in the 2011 general elections.

Michael Mabikke, SDP President

SDP President Michael Mabikke who is the MP for Makindye East said his party had decided to support a joint opposition effort in order to a have a better chance of uprooting the current regime.

The President of Uganda People’s Congress, Dr. Olara Otunu, Forum for Democratic Change Vice President, Salaam Musumba, Conservative party president Ken Lukyamuzi and JEEMA President Asuman Basalirwa witnessed the function today where Mabikke signed to work with the Inter party Coalition.

He said his party will mobiles for the Inter party Coalition and campaign for joint opposition candidates in the forth coming Uganda elections.

This leaves his parent party, the Democratic party as the only key opposition party yet to join the Inter party coalition. DP President General vowed on the weekend the DP will not join the opposition coalition which he says is a ploy to put all other parties under the FDC.

But UPC’s Olara Otunu today appealed to Mao to join the opposition coalition arguing that all opposition parties currently need each other to put up a real challenge to the current National Resistance Movement government.

Another breakaway faction of the Democratic Party led by Dr. Lulume Bayiga also recently announced it is will support the Inter party coalition, making Mao more politically isolated as he prepares for his biggest political career events.
