The Guest Scholarship Programme: The Swedish Institute Guest Scholarship Programme is open to students from developing countries.

The scholarships are applied for in global competition and are open to foreign students/researchers who wish to travel to Sweden as guest students and who do not intend to settle permanently in Sweden.

General Criteria:

Citizenship:

In principle, the Guest Scholarships are open for students from any part of the world except from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden).

The Swedish Institute will distribute the scholarships as evenly as possible among applicants from different geographical areas.

The Guest Scholarship Programme – Age: There is no age limit.

Study level:

The scholarships are intended for students at advanced university level, for part of Ph.D. or post-doc studies at any university or university college in Sweden or for participation in a Master’s Level Programme.

There are no scholarships available for undergraduate studies. The scholarships cannot be granted for a complete course of study leading to a Ph.D. degree.

Study period:

The maximum scholarship period is three academic years but the scholarships are usually granted for one academic year (nine months) at a time.

They can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration. The scholarships are intended to finance a temporary stay in Sweden.

The Guest Scholarship Programme – Fields of study

Scholarships are granted for studies within all subjects. There are no scholarships available for learning basic Swedish.

Foreign students in Sweden:

Students already studying in Sweden are eligible to apply provided that they are not permanent residents, nor holders of a Swedish work permit, and they may not have been living in Sweden for more than two years when the scholarship is due to begin.(*Not applicable for EU citizens.)

Scholarship conditions:

At present, the scholarships amount to SEK 8,000 per month for graduate and research students and SEK 12,000 for holders of a PhD degree.

Each scholarship is designed to cover the living expenses of ONE person only.

There are no grants of any kind for family members. Scholarship holders from developing countries will also receive a partial travel grant. The travel grant is a lump sum given only once.

The scholarship holder is insured by the Swedish Institute against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship limitations

Scholarship periods are fixed to 6, 12 or 18 months. The scholarship periods cannot be altered or prolonged.

Study Scholarship: The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from the countries listed below.

About 120 scholarships will be awarded for studies in Sweden, starting in August every year.

The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees.

Please note that in order to apply for a Swedish Institute Study scholarship the student must first be admitted to a Swedish university/university college.

Countries

The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.

Category 1:

Candidates with citizenship from the following countries in Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Within this category around 60 scholarships will be awarded.

Category 2:

Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients, with some exceptions.

Undergraduate and Master Level Scholarships

Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden starting in the fall semester (August) and focus mainly on master’s level. A few scholarships will be awarded for studies at bachelor’s level.

Scholarship Eligibility

The scholarships are intended for students from the above mentioned target group for full time studies in Sweden.

There is no age limit for scholarship holders. Scholarships cannot be granted for students who:

  • Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
  • Have a Swedish permanent residence or work permit.
  • Have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at Master’s level or for research at a Swedish university.
  • Already hold a Master’s degree from a Swedish university/university college.
  • Are currently enrolled in a study program on Bachelor’s or Master’s level at a Swedish university or university college.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

Prior to applying for a scholarship, the student must first apply for a study program at Master’s or Bachelor’s level.

About 600 different study programs at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship.

Scholarship Benefits and Period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 8,000 per month.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.

Travel Grants

Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 10.000.
