The new British PM Theresa May

Just days after assuming office, the new administration of British Prime Minister Theresa May has made plans to bare foreign students from working in Britain under a fresh crackdown on immigration. Among other proposals to be tabled later this week, May also wants the stay of the foreign students to be cut to two years.

May assumed the new office of British Prime Minister this week following the recent resignation of her predecessor David Cameroon after his push for Britain remain in the European Union failed in a referendum recently. May is the second female British Prime Minister after Margaret Thatcher to hold such an office.

The new measures are big blow to prospective Uganda students and nkuba kyeyos who will now face strict laws on immigration that will drastically affect their livelihoods. Most students from African countries including Uganda end up taking up odd jobs in UK as a survival mechanism away from the unemployment realities of their home countries.

Under the new rules, non-EU college students will be denied the right to work while in the UK and will not be able to apply for a visa extension when their course finishes.

Students will have to leave the country before applying to return under a work visa.

Official figures show that 121,000 non-EU students entered the UK in the 12 months to June last year, but only 51,000 left – a net influx of 70,000.

The government estimates that the number of foreign students coming to the UK will rise by more than 6 per cent a year up to 2020.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said it was ‘part of our plan to control immigration for the benefit of Britain’.

Taxpayers who pay for colleges expect them to be providing top-class education, not a back door to a British work visa

Immigration minister James Brokenshire

‘Immigration offenders want to sell illegal access to the UK jobs market and there are plenty of people willing to buy.

‘Hard-working taxpayers who are helping to pay for publicly funded colleges expect them to be providing top-class education, not a back door to a British work visa.’

But universities have warned that any clampdown could damage the sector and business leaders are also wary of the move, warning it could rob Britain of vital skills.

Seamus Nevin, head of employment and skills at the Institute of Directors, said: ‘The Business Secretary’s proposals to eject foreign students after graduation are misguided and would damage the British education system, our economy and global influence.

‘Britain already makes it difficult and artificially expensive for international students to enter and stay, and now these proposals would eject them ignominiously when their studies are finished.

‘Restricting talented workers from staying on in the UK would damage business and lead to a loss of important skills.

‘Shutting the door to highly-trained international graduates at a time when our economy needs them most would be hugely damaging for UK businesses.

‘In the interests our education sector, our businesses, and our international standing, the Business Secretary should reconsider this proposal.’

We have intercepted crucial information that the judiciary’s week long integrity tour will cost Ugandan taxpayers 800 million shillings. A source in accounts department in the judiciary informed us yesterday that the money is supposed to meet the transport costs, accommodation and feeding of the members of the judiciary Integrity Committee who are on the national wide tour to collect information affecting the services of the judiciary.

The tour started on Tuesday. The judicial spokesman, Erias Kisawuzi says that this exercise is conducted annually. He says that every year the judiciary sends five teams to move around the country to gather public views on the weakness in administration of justice among others, and how the third arm of government can improve its services.

According to the programme, the judiciary has assigned Supreme Court judge, Jotham Tumwesigye to head the western region, Justice Augustine Nshimye to head a team going to northern Uganda, Judge Wilson Musene is in charge of Eastern region and Justice Akiiki Kiiza is in charge of Buganda.

Several humanitarian reports have been citing the judiciary as one of the most corrupt institutions in Uganda followed by the police, Uganda Revenue Authority, district service commissions and Umeme among others.

Although UMEME has been sending messages on peoples’ phones that the people of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono districts among others are to continue facing frequent outages because the ‘Mutundwe’ power station is under restoration, we have learnt that this information is not true.

An impeccable source at statehouse intimated to us that the agreement which the government made with ‘Agreeko’ Power Company has been permanently cancelled. It is agreeko which has been running Mutundwe power sub station.

A source in state house says that the problem of load shedding will permanently end in January 2012. From January 2012 it will be has hard as a donkey to pass into the hole of a needle for power to get off.

This source tells us that the government cut off agreeko because running its generators was so expensive for the taxpayers. We hear each generator of agreeko would consume nine million shillings in general.
