Following the failure by The Democratic Alliance (TDA) to come out with a single presidential candidate to take on the incumbent in the 2016 polls, it has been determined that the disorganization and deficiencies are attributed to government’s continuous pressure on the opposition to keep them weak.

Speaking to a political scientist, Sabastian Rwengabo says these are dangerous signs for democratization in the country as the voters who did not turn up for the exercise in 2011 will not turn up as they will think the opposition offers no alternative promises to the nation and now those who will turn up are likely to vote for the incumbent.

Sabastian argues that had the opposition come up with a joint candidate, then many voters who would have voted for the incumbent would be voting for the opposition joint candidate with many from the ruling party who are calling for change together with those in the opposition. However with this now becoming a failure, the incumbent is going to use the divisions in the opposition to ride high and win them.

He also challenged the opposition for coming up with the idea very late which also factored into the disagreements currently in the group.

TDA is an opposition alliance created to front one candiate for the 2016 Presidential elections. The alliance failed to choose a single candidate to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 presidential election after nearly a week of deliberation.
