As the country joins the rest of the world to mark the world toilet day, Kampala capital city authority is urged to partner with local authorities in slum areas to construct modern toilets.

According to the Kisenyi 2 LC1 chairman Swaibu Kwenyi, the village has only one public toilet which was constructed eight years ago and not operational anymore.

He says the community is at high risk of contracting diseases like cholera due to poor hygiene.

He says that many people in such communities still use polythene bags that are littered in drainages.

The day was gazetted by the UN general assembly to highlight the importance of toilets in ensuring proper hygiene.

Toilet papers as the name suggests is primarily meant to be used in toilets though it has acquired a lot of secondly functions now days like blowing the nose and being used as cheaper alternative sanitary pads, especially among school girls.
Using toilet papers as cheaper alternative sanitary pads is dangerous because it can cause infections because of its off tinny particles which could find their way into the birth canal, attach onto the small threads of the device and eventually cause infections in the womb.
Some of the toilet papers we have on the Uganda market are not safe, therefore unsafe to use as pads or handkerchiefs. Certain toilet papers produce very small dust particles which may be inhaled by the user while blowing the nose. This can induce sneezing which may mimic allergy.  There are disposable paper handkerchiefs meant for that but not toilet papers.

Makerere University has invented mobile toilets to be used by people living in slum areas such.

The project manager, Amin Tamala says that the metallic toilet facility has been designed to incorporate the application of solar energy in the functioning of the mobile trailer toilets.

Amin Tamala says that areas such as Kalerwe, Bwaise and Katanga which have a high water table which cannot allow them to construct normal pit latrines may use the new toilet solutions.

The new toilets can also work well for refugees and those people in disaster prone areas like Bududu.

Makerere University has designed metallic mobile toilets code named ‘Smart Portable public trailer toilets’.

The metallic mobile toilets are in a trailer like form and they are intended to benefit masses especially urban centers and slum communities in Uganda.
The metallic mobile toilets have been constructed using metallic materials. The metallic mobile toilets technology is new in Uganda and in Africa. These metallic mobile toilets have four units. The metallic toilets have been designed by Makerere University’s College of engineering design, Art and Technology under the Architecture and mechanical engineering.

Dr. Allan Birabi, the project team researcher says that the metallic mobile toilets would benefit the urban residents and communities facing with poor sanitation where access to clean and decent toilet facilities is a problem.

The metallic mobile toilets can be used by major institutions with poor toilet facilities like schools, hospitals, and army and police barracks.

The metallic mobile toilets will integrate the unique qualities of a portable, self-contained toilet model with the dynamic ecological systems of urban centers in Uganda.

The professors at Makerere University say that the smart public toilets will also cater for the needs of disabled people which most current mobile toilets tend to ignore.

Latest research shows that among the dirtiest places in our homes/ houses, toilets or chickens are the doors.

The research discoveries indicate that doors harbour all sorts of diseases causing organisms.

The germs on door handlers are introduced by people that touch them depending on what one is suffering from for example alimentary canal germs, viruses, common cold, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

Some people especially in Africa don’t clean their hands after toilet use but they simply touch on the door handles.

Some diseases/ infections like red eyes infections can be minimised by hand  washing with soap and running water and it should be at least once a day or more times.

Have you ever thought about the debris that rests on a brush after you have used it to clean inside our toilets?

Some of the brushes we use to clean our toilets at home are stored in bowl-like containers.

But both the brush and the bowls our brushes are kept after cleaning the toilets can be a breeding ground for various germs and bacteria.

It should be disinfected at least weakly with hot water. Besides habouring germs, a dirty toilet brush leaves the toilet room with an odour.

Insurance companies will have to come to the rescue of the former Makerere University Guild president because we hear thugs last night swept his home in Nakasero when he was away for burial in Gulu.

When Denis Okema returned home with his family, his house was wide open with no trace of his property, save for rolls of toilet pepper.

Like he was possessed Okema rushed to neighbours and shouted ‘my house has been swept clean and all the property stolen.’

The neighbours also came and checked his house and found it empty. Okema has now reported the matter to the area police post and as usual the force is hunting for the thugs. The police are yet to nab the people who stole Okema’s property.
