As the preparations for the 17th coronation celebrations for King Oyo Nyimba Kamba Iguru Rukiidi IV are in high gear at Karuzika, Civil and human rights players in Tooro kingdom are also organizing special celebrations to be held on the 9th September at the Public library.

The group calling itself the reformists say they want to see several short comings that have hindered development in Tooro kingdom addressed.

Among the many issues the reformists want to be addressed include the mismanagement of kingdom land by Kingdom officials, the nullification of the kingdom constitution among others which they say has weakened the kingdoms key arms like the supreme council.

Kankya Gerald the coordinator says the group says that King Oyo whom they expect to be the chief guest has already received his invitation letter and that a number of activities that include feasting, traditional dance and a speech from the king are to take place on the 9th.

Kankya says that the kingdom leaders organizing the coronation do not have the any moral authority to organize or hold any Kingdom function.

On Monday King Oyo met the clan leaders and agreed to fulfil their demands and end the conflict in the kingdom

Several calls to settle conflicts in Toro Kingdom have fallen on a deaf ear with no individual or group showing interest to mediate in the conflict that have rocked the Kingdom for over 6 months.

The conflict emerged when King Oyo dismissed the Kingdom Premier William Nyakatura and replaced him with Apolo Karugaba something that led the king to be dragged to court by the clan council who claimed the dismissal of Nyakatura and appointment of Apolo Karugaba was illegal.

Several political and religious leaders have proposed that the conflict be settled but nothing has been done about it and instead more conflicts are increasingly coming up within the kingdom.

Isaac Rubona who has several times mediated in the Kingdom conflict in the past says the people are tired of mediating the conflict because the reconciliation will not yield any fruit.

Rubona cited several premiers who have been appointed and dismissed because of the conflict. He says the conflict will end if the involved parties release their mistakes.

Gertrude Byekya a former Member in the Kingdom Parliament says people don’t care about the current conflicts because they feel they have been cheated by a section of Kingdom officials.

Byekya says that unlike other Kingdom in the country which helps its subjects, the Kingdom has for instance failed to set income generating projects for special interest groups and giving bursaries to needy students.

She also says that some people in the Kingdom feel they are not part of the Kingdom because they have been detached from the king by Kingdom officials.

Meanwhile the recent court injunction stopping any activity has brought work at stand still at the Kingdom Headquarters at Mucwa. Last month the High Court in Fort portal issued an injunction halting any activity carried out in the kingdom.

Samuel Musana the estate manager says workers have not been paid for their salaries because bank accounts have been frozen by court injunctions.

He further says the kingdom can’t collect money from tenants who occupy Kingdom land and buildings. Musana also said the implementation of tree planting project has failed because of the 10 million shillings from the world wide fund was deposited on the Kingdom’s Account and can’t be withdrawn.

The bill covers marriages that are considered legal, streamlines the status of men, women and children in families as well as resolution of differences that have existed for ages like property distribution.

Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is carrying out a two-day sensitization workshop that started on Tuesday in Kampala for traditional leaders from different cultural institutions at hotel triangle in Kampala.

The officials from Toro kingdom have expressed commitment to collaborate with government in rolling out the regulations once the bill is finalized and passed into law.

The kingdom’s information minister , Arthur Namala says once enacted it will help in fighting injustices like burdening the women with house work as men are enjoying leisure while family relatives await grabbing property.

The Rwenzururu Kingdom Constitutional Affairs Minister, Rev. Jehoadah Mutooro says the law will face challenges at implementation level given the divergent religious beliefs and constitutional provisions in relation to interpretation of lawful marriages.
