Students at the Mukono- based Uganda Christian University(UCU) have formed a group that will help to fight the wide spread corruption scandal in Uganda.

The team was a result of the five- day event at the Department of Public Administration and Governance under the theme: “Towards a more strategic partnership in the fight against corruption in Uganda.”

The coalition that was formulated on October 29, 2019 was inspired by scripture of Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”

Dennis Kakembo, a second-year Law student at UCU said the war against corruption starts with “we” the people.

Cissy Kagaba, Executive Director of the Uganda Anti-Corruption Coalition emphasized Kakembo’s argument stating poverty is not a cause of corruption as cheating in exams and being late for class is another are also forms of corruption.

“We tend to forget and put the blame on government, but imagine a traffic officer stops you and immediately you pull out money to give him or her (to avoid a ticket) even when they did not ask for it, then you are corrupt.” Kagaba remarked.

“Poverty is just a force that places people in the position of need all the time,” Dr. Benon Musinguzi, the UCU Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs explained.

“We are privileged that our students and graduates emulate the core values of the University diligence and integrity being among them,” Martin Kizito, the Head of Department Public Administration and Governance at UCU said.

“If the fight against corruption is to be a success especially amongst the youth, then other Universities should take up this initiative so that we can all stand up and fight for the same cause,” said Phillips Odwokacen, a Lecturer at UCU.

The coalition is formed at the time when Uganda is facing high levels of corruption cases and according to the Berlin Transparency International group global corruption statistics of 180 countries, Uganda was placed among the most corrupt with 26 of 100 points.

The least corrupt nation in the world, New Zealand, had 89 of 100 points.

Anti-corruption campaigners oppose a move by the legislators to have government increase its contribution to their pension scheme warning that it will greatly affect Ugandans financially. This following a parliamentary sitting last month in which MPs called for amendment of the pensions act to increase government’s contribution up from the current 30%. They argued that the increment will help them live a better life after living parliament.

Addressing journalists at ACCU offices, Cissy Kagaba, Executive Director Anti-Corruption Coalition Uganda, Peter Wandera, Executive Director Transparency International, and David Walakira budget specialist said government should expedite establishing an independent   salary review commission to stop such selfish motives further warning that they will de- campaign every MP who supports such an amendment.

Meanwhile Ugandan women are strongly condemning the increasing acts of militarism in the country saying that this is alarming and spells doom for the nation that is heading into the political climate. Irene Ovongi Odida, the Executive Director, FIDA-Uganda mentions that the  rising brutal arrests of women activists who also end up being humiliated scare them away from political leadership of the nation depriving women of their right to participate in the governance of the nation.

Ovongi called on government to revise the way it is aggressively handling the citizens and ask citizens to speak out through the legislative arm to have such crimes brought to a stop.

Culturally there is a saying that while as Men are the head of the Family, Women are seen as the neck of the family, literally meaning that as Men provide for the family Women have always been seen at the centre of directing home affairs and management.

Corruption in society is a viewed as a wider complex problem, which requires first understanding before solutions are rolled out; from moral decadence, praising the rich to political impunity and inefficient policies.

Women play a central role in fighting corruption right from their homes before we can even role out their responsibilities in their communities.

Not that women are not corrupt themselves but the position they hold is central in fighting corruption, In the African setup women are seen as custodians of improving morals and proper upbringing of children in a home, this is central if addressing the causes of corruption is to take centre stage.

As the saying goes; “charity begins At home” children’s behavior in the community and later public institutions is reflective of their moral upbringing.

Notwithstanding women are highly regarded by men as central in imparting and disciplining the young generation considering the fact that they spend more time with the children than men, who are always out fending for their wellbeing.

Studies have it that children confide more and share with their mothers about personal issues, who in turn provide solutions and suggestions, but even go further to solving amicably arising issues.

It is this nurturing role in women that if clearly defined and considered shall help anticorruption activists tackle corruption, for it is every person’s role to fight corruption.

Transparency International wants all African leaders who have voraciously stolen national wealth from their respective countries removed from power and prosecuted in international court of justice rather than waiting for them to first quit power.

Many African heads of states reportedly steal their countries resources and hide them on bank accounts and real estates in America and Europe.

Take an example of the former president of Zaire (now renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo), the late Mobutu Sese Sekou Wazabanga. The man reportedly stole millions of USA dollars and stashed it away in various European and USA bank accounts and left his country one of the poorest in the world. Transparence international now wants all forgotten riches of African presidents frozen until they are returned to Africans the way France, USA and England froze the ill-gotten wealth of the former Libyan leader, Col. Muammar Gadaffi.

Transparency International says that the time for African leaders to embezzle funds with impunity should be forgotten completely. This is the reason the French government is investigating three sitting African presidents for their ill-gotten wealth that have been squirreled in various parts of France.

The presidents in question are Ali Bongo of Gabon, Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo Brazzaville and Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea.  Many people in Uganda wish that France also investigates Ugandan leaders who are reported to have bank accounts in various cities across Europe and USA. Many families of African heads of states have been accused of having ill gotten wealth and showing staggering extravagancy.
