Kayoola solar electric bus

Government to unveil Kayoola solar electric bus on 16th February in Kampala. The solar bus which is a first of its kind in Uganda and East Africa will be launched by the President at Kampala Serena hotel. The project which started in 2011, was initiated to explore the possibilities of using solar technology to support the mass transportation that Ugandans commonly use.
The minister of Trade and industry says that Kayoola solar bus will provide a locally sourced, eco -friendly public transport solution in East  and Central Africa. She says that this project will create many jobs for Ugandans and protect the environment since there will be no noise while cruising.

This bus will hit the Ugandan road in 2018 as the Ugandan engineers say that this solar-powered bus is a solution to Africa’s roads since it is purely electric. The 35-seat bus is intende d for urban areas rather than inter-city use because of the restrictions on how far it can travel and each is expected to cost up to 58,000 dollars.

The Former Presidential Candidate in Uganda, Dr Kiiza Besigye was arrested on Tuesday morning and taken to Kira road Police station (a place which some Ugandans refer to as ‘torture Chamber’).

The Police said that Dr Besigye was arrested to stop him from using public transport (Public Taxi). But Dr Besigye’s car was attacked and damaged by some security operatives who were in plain clothes last Friday 1/03/2013.

What puzzles Ugandans most is that the same Police arrested Kiiza to stop him from using public transport well aware that his car was damaged and vandalized as police looked on.

Also Ugandans ask where in the world Police can arrest someone because he/she decided to travel by public transport? Police intercepted the former Forum for Democratic Change president at his home in Kasangati as he departed for court in Kampala.

Kampala North police chief, Steven Tanoi however says that Besigye was arrested because police had obtained information that Besigye was planning to cause mayhem in the city on his way to Buganda Road court where he faces charges.

Besigye was supposed to reappear in court on Tuesday in case he and others are accused of managing an unlawful assembly that led to the murder of an Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) John Bosco Ariong.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has described as illegal the decision by Pioneer Easy Bus Company to hike fares.

The company this morning moved to act on its threat to hike the fares with the minimum fares across the different routes by an average of shs 500.

Passengers plying the bweyogerere Route will have to part with 1500 shillings while Bugoloobi and other shorter routes are now at 1000 shillings.

He says the authority has not been consulted nor permitted pioneer to increase the fares.

Lukwago adds that he is to convene a council meeting as soon as possible to discuss the developments.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) accepts interns from time to time on an ad hoc basis.

The internships are open to graduate or post-graduate students, who have specialized in a field related to UNECE programmes of work, namely: environment, transport, statistics, sustainable energy, trade, timber and forests, housing and land management, population, and economic cooperation and integration.

Occasionally, the Commission has a need for interns with specific skills and will post those internship opportunities.

Internships are offered free-of-charge and without financial remuneration.

The United Nations accepts no legal or administrative liability for interns who are not accorded the status of a United Nations staff member.

All costs connected with an internship, including travel, accommodation1 and insurance, are borne by the intern or his/her sponsor.

An internship carries no expectancy of subsequent employment with the United Nations. Interns are required to submit a certificate of good health and, wherever applicable, to obtain themselves the appropriate visa.

Eligibility criteria:

To qualify for UNECE internship programme, the applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship.

Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

It seems the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA) is not leaving the Old and New Taxi Parks as it was earlier anticipated following President Museveni’s directive to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

It is said that the president on Tuesday sent a memo to the clerk to KCCA council and to the KCCA executive Director, Ms Jenifer Musisi indicating that the council should reorganize the transport system in Kampala between March and April and in May 2012 the powers to run the transport system should get back to UTODA.

The memo comes weeks after the chairperson of UTODA; Hajji Moses Katongole went to state house and pleaded with the president to save UTODA. According to sources in KCCA, Museveni advises that eliminating UTODA may cause more turmoil in the KCCA transport system.

Museveni reportedly advised that the tender to run buses and taxis should remain with KCCA but KCCA should hire an organisation such as UTODA to implement the contract.

The drivers accused Mivule of being biased whenever he discusses the issue concerning the transport business inKampala.

The drivers complain that Mivule has been rubbishing commuter taxis for long advocating for their banning in favour of a bus company called Pioneer Easy Bus which is owned by big shots inUgandagovernment.

The drivers also accused Mivule of being bribed by the directors of Pioneer Easy Bus Company to promote the bus business and make town dwellers to shun taxi transport.

But unfortunately, on the drivers’ side, Mivule had been tipped off and ran away. The angry drivers left the radio stations singing pro Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago songs and anti president Museveni songs.

The people who have been raising eyebrows and excited that the Pioneer Bus services are already in Kampala should first read this.

Although the busses are now parked opposite Kampala Parents primary School in Kampala they are not expected to start operating on March 01 as it was earlier reported in the media.

The Director of Kampala in charge of planning, Joseph Sentongo says that the Bus P.roject has not been finalized and what is about to be unveiled is a pilot project to establish the efficiency of the bus transport industry. He says that the project may not kick off before the city authorities find a place which is going to serve as a bus park.

Sentongo says that KCCA wants the bus transport system in Uganda to be as modern as it is in United   Kingdom. The buses were supposed to offer transport services from Kampala to Luzira, Bweyogere, Ntinda, Mulago, Nakawa and Namugongo. We are told that the government plans to create a bus lane on Bombo road near Wandegeya.

The committee on Public service and Local government has started investigations into the contract Pioneer Easy bus recently signed with Kampala Capital City Authority.

The district leaders of Wakiso and Mukono allege that pioneer easy bus illegally got the contract to operate in their areas of jurisdiction.

The district leaders of Mukono and Wakiso say that they want Pioneer Bus to operate only inKampalasince they were licenced by KCCA.

According to the programme at parliament, the management of Pioneer easy bus will appear before MPs on Friday to defend themselves against accusation of corruption. The woman MP for Kalungu, Florence Kintu confirms that parliament is probing pioneer easy bus and KCCA. She says that preliminary evidence shows that pioneer bus got the contract to operate in Wakiso and Mukono illegally because there was no advertisement to that effect. She says one can not be given a licence to operate in another district without involving the leaders of the district in question.
