Human rights activists are strongly reminding government to expeditiously ratify all the international human rights treaties has signed to act as a symbol of total commitment to observing people’s rights. Giving a paper presentation to the current global ratification status of Uganda in a meeting, Andrew Arutu, the national programme officer UN-OCHR mentions that failure by Uganda to ratify these rights treaties and implement them prevents citizens from fully enjoying their rights.

Andrew also states that such circumstances have given a bright green light to state operatives and officials to continue infringing on other people’s rights as they cannot be held fully accountable for their acts.
Among the treaties Uganda needs to fully ratify include, the international convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination, global covenant on economic, social and cultural rights, covenant on civil and political rights, covenant on the rights of migrant workers and all members of their families, among others.

]]> Members of Parliament want government to enter into treaties with other countries to repatriate Ugandans prisoners currently held in foreign prisons.

Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze Bakireke notes that countries such as Malaysia and China are holding in custody several Ugandans on charges of drug trafficking, murder and other crimes.
Nambooze says efforts by some of the Justice Ministries in these countries have tried to contact their Ugandan counterparts have been futile since the latter have not been receptive.
She says there should be an exchange programme where prisoners in foreign countries can serve their sentences in their home states.
