The Uganda Women Network has recommended that the government should train judges and other judicial officers in Uganda on issues related to domestic violence if the government is to ensure that the Domestic Violence Act achieves the purpose for its enactment.

Domestic violence still widespread in Uganda

This comes about eight months after the enactment of the Act which was passed by parliament on 11th November 2009 to curtail domestic violence which is reported to be widespread in Uganda.

UWONET in its annual publication says it is delighted that this bill was passed by Parliament last year and that is a positive step towards the fight against domestic violence in Uganda.

UWONET says however in order to ensure that the newly passed law is properly implemented, there is need to come with measures like training judges in issues related to domestic violence like child custody, economic support and security of the victims of domestic violence.

UWONET says such training will enable judges to establish guidelines on court actions involving domestic violence from an informed perspective and thus make the judges and judicial officials put in place relevant guidelines that will asset the implementation of domestic violence Act.
