The Uganda police has foiled the planned Uganda opposition planned demonstration in Kampala City today as a way of commemorating the National Heroes Day. The main National Heroes day celebrations are taking place in Luweero district with President Yoweri Museveni presiding as the chief guest.

Kiiza BesigyeAccording to eye witnesses, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr. Kiiza Besigye was slapped by police officers during the fracas.

The demonstration which was organized by Uganda political parties of FDC, JEEMA, CP and UPC under their umbrella organization the Inter-party cooperation (IPC) planned to be held at Kampala Clock Tower has now been shifted to Katwe Market in the outskirts of Kampala City.

Dr. Besigye however, forcefully managed to address the crowds at Katwe market and told them that the IPC will continue to demand for electoral reforms to avoid vote rigging in the 2011 Uganda general elections.

The FDC chief also called for the disbandment of the current Uganda Electoral Commission leadership including their chairperson Eng. Badru Kiggundu because it’s not fit enough to conduct free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, the IPC spokesperson, Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda has told journalists that the demonstration is being shifted to Uganda Parliamentary gardens but, eye witnesses say the building is heavily surrounded by military personnel making it hard for demonstrators to gain access.
