The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Spokesman Nsereko Mutumba has dismissed reports of the sacking of the Uganda Muslims Mufti Shiek Ramathan Mubbajje by the UMSC chairperson Hassan Bassajjabalaba.

Mutumba says Bassajabalaba has no constitutional powers to sack the head of the Uganda Muslims.

He says it’s the Uganda Muslims Mufti who asked the UMSC chairperson to step aside to allow investigations into his financial dealings with the Uganda Muslims Supreme Body.

In a letter dated 14th June 2010, the chairperson of the Uganda Muslims supreme body suspended the Uganda Muslims Mufti for conducting himself in a manner which was un Islamic.

Bassajabala says his decision was based on accusations raised by members of the Uganda Muslims Joint session. The Joint Session is a body of 30 members comprising of the national Muslim executive and the college of Sheiks, both elected by the general assembly.

The two Uganda Muslim leaders have been in court over cases of mismanaging Uganda Muslim properties. The mismanagement of Uganda Muslim properties has led to divisions leading to the creation of Anti-Ramathan Mubbajje Muslim Kibuli Mosque faction headed by Shiek Zubairi Kayongo.

This is after the lawyer representing sheik Hassan Kirya and three others told court that some sheikhs have approached his clients begging them to settle the matter out of court.

Sheik Hassan Kirya and three others through their lawyers, Fisal Mukasa and company advocates sued Mufti Mubajje, Kampala Businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba, Edrisa Kasenene , Drake Lubega and nine others challenging the sale of plot 30 on William street and plot 102 on port bell road in Luzira in Kampala.

Sheik Kirya and others dragged Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) to order Mufti Mubajje and his colleagues to return the said Moslem properties which were sold to a city tycoon Drake Lubega.

However Drake Lubega informed court that he has no problem with the settlement if he is paid back.

Mubajje and his colleagues were earlier set free by Buganda road chief magistrate’s court citing lack of sufficient evidence to sustain the conviction on the said illegal sale of properties.

The row has since led to the division of the Muslims into two sections, one led by Mufti Mubajje and the other by Mufti Zubairu Kayongo.
