A word from the choreographer, Valérie

Miquel<http://www.ugandanationalcontemporaryballet.org/Site/Val%C3%A9rie_Miquel.html>,on Stravinsky’s masterpiece

“I have always wished to create this great work, Rite of Spring, but before now was never able to find the dancers I needed. And now I have found them; the Uganda National Contemporary Ballet<http://www.ugandanationalcontemporaryballet.org/Site/Ballet.html>has what

it takes. Thanks to them we can now present this fantastic piece of music and dance.

“There is no story. For me the music is a celebration of life: life in nature, life of human beings. Spring is the strongest season – the rebirth of nature each year – and is full of strength and energy. Spring is also the season of renewal, where all is new, innocent, and open to everyone. That is why we have among us a little five year-old girl, Martina.

“We are one powerful African dance company, working in fusion with European style.”

“The dancers represent all the powerful animalistic instincts of life, which are in all of us.

Forget about understanding, just feel free and flow with us through this passionate dance.

And celebrate life!

Renowned Play Wright Wycliffe Kiyingi’s Muduma Kwe Kaffe has started showing at the National Theatre and will be showing every Saturday and Sunday at 3:00pm and 7:00pm up to August 3 2010.

Playwright Wyclif Kiyingi

The 4 act play directed by Kaya Kagimu Mukasa is centered on the political and economic confusion that reigned in Uganda since 1945.

The play whose time setting is the pre and post colonial era in Uganda portrays that up to 1945 Indians dominated trade and commerce in Uganda but after the return of the world war veterans during that time
becomes a challenge to their dominance in trade and commerce as these reveal to the African natives that in the Indian’s home country it is the natives that dominate trade.

They suggest that should also be the case with African Natives in Uganda that they should dominate trade and commerce in their home country. This suggestion does not go down well with the Indians is the cause of the political confusion that
follows.

The plays’ greatest strength its richness in content and massage plus the fact that it still manages to adequate appeal to the contemporary society yet it is written about fifty years ago but that it is because
of its keen attention to social political themes like embezzlement disillusionment causing lack patriotism among others that make it easily identify with the contemporary society.

Muduma Kwe Kwaffe is literally translated to mean that “Muduma” is our home.

The Playwright is a doyen of Ugandan Theatre and was crowned Golden Artist of the during the celebrations to mark 50 years of existence of the Uganda National Cultural Centre.

A re-known Ugandan play Wright and theatre legend Wycliffe Kiyingi, will have his plays translated from Luganda the language in which most of them are written to other languages, Ultimate Media reveals.

Wycliffe Kiyingi who was honored by the National Theatre as the “Golden Artist” during celebrations to mark National theatre fifty years of existence with a play called “Muduma Kwe Kwaffe” which will be showing at the Uganda National Theatre next month has written a number of brilliant plays mostly in Luganda.

Parliament of Uganda

Uganda Parliament asked to honour Kiyingi

Kiyingi told Journalists at the Uganda National Theatre that he is working with some people to have his plays translated to English – the official language of Uganda to help market the plays to wider audiences beyond Uganda.

The Director of the Play Kaya Kagimu Mukasa says Kiyingi’s writings are very expressive and therefore easily understandable.

Meanwhile, the Uganda National Theatre wants the Parliament of Uganda to recognize Wycliffe Kiyingi as an icon of Ugandan theatre in the same spirit Uganda Parliament recognized Late Elly Wamala – an icon of Uganda’s music according to the Uganda National Theatre boss Joseph Walugembe.
