This happened after the Uganda opposition, under their umbrella organization called the inter-party cooperation (IPC) tried to hold a rally in Kampala to commemorate the Uganda National Heroes day held on Wednesday (9th June, 2010). The national celebrations were held in Luweero district and presided over by president Museveni as chief guest.

According to the police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, the culprit is still unknown but a lot of information has been received by the police which will lead to the arrest of the culprits. She says anyone found will be prosecuted.

The rally aimed at commemorating Uganda Heroes day and demanding for electoral reforms to avoid electoral malpractices in the coming 2011 Uganda general elections was foiled by heavily armed Uganda Anti – riot Police.

Forum for Democratic Change chief dismissed the beating as ‘immaterial in the fight for free and fair elections in Uganda’ while briefing journalists outside the Uganda parliament gate.

Meanwhile Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima was among hundreds of Heroes awarded medals by President Museveni during the National Heroes day celebrations for her commendable efforts in the armed struggle that brought the current government to power.
