A number of women organisations have spoken out in support of President Museveni’s bid to amend the constitution with a view of denying bail to a cross section of criminal offenders.

During a media workshop with the Parliamentary Journalists, the Executive Director of CEDOVIP Tina Musuya says that they strongly agree with the President to deny bail for rapists and defilers.

Tina Musuya of CEDOVIP

Musuya says many children and women have fallen victim of rape and defilement and yet the culprits are granted bail which causes emotional trauma to the families of the victims.

She has urged the law makers to seriously consider the view of the President particularly for the two crimes committed since they have lasting impacts on the victims.

Recently, the President passionately spoke about his desire to have the constitution amended so that rapists, defilers, rioters and economic saboteurs are denied bail.

The constitution provides for the granting of bail terms as the Justice or magistrate may deem necessary, adding that bail is a human right to which every suspect is entitled.

The president’s proposal however includes denying bail to economic saboteurs, people who incite violence among other categories that have been criticized as aimed at easily locking up opposition activists.
