Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has warned parents in Kagadi against marrying off school-going children, saying government will not tolerate such impunity.
Kadaga was presiding over a fundraising function at Mugarike Parish Catholic Church in Kagadi, were she showed her frustration over a report that the majority of girls in the area are dropping out of school for marriage.
“This is wrong. Many children don’t reach senior four because they go to get married. I ask you to take this matter seriously,” said Kadaga.
Earlier, MP Janepher Mbabazi (NRM, Kagadi) had accused parents of profiting from child marriage.
“We have a challenge of girl child education. The number of girls in schools keep reducing due to early marriages; people view children as a source of wealth in this region,” said Mbabazi.
Kadaga said the rationale behind introducing the Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) programmes is to have all school going children in school, but warned that government will apprehend the detractors.
Kadaga participated in a fundraising drive that saw the collection of over Shs20m in cash and donations.  She contributed Shs10m for the construction of the Church.
According to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)’s State of the World’s Children 2016 Report, at least one in every two girls in Uganda is married before the age of 18, the lawful age of consent in Uganda.
Cultural Practice, an organization monitoring women and girl child progress conducted a study in 2006, where more than half (53 per cent) of women aged between 20–49 were married before the age of 18.
The organization noted that the reasons for early marriage are rooted in traditional and social norms, as well as factors such as women’s disadvantaged status, poverty and biases against girls’ education.
The function was attended by among others, the Minister of State for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President, Hon Kasirivu-Atwooli Baltazar and a host of local leaders.

BABY WALKERS: Many parents in Uganda, Africa, America, Asia, Latin America, and Europe use baby walkers in order to help their babies to walk fast.

However the latest research raises concerns about the walker. According to a United States of America (USA) based study; locomoto milestones and baby walkers cross section study, established that the use of baby walkers delays the child’s ability to walk independently by a few weeks.

The research reveals that walkers tend to have an abnormal gait at first, though it resolves with time. In addition, the walker increases the risk of injuries. The researchers so they advise parents and guardians to shun the use of baby walkers.

Finance Minister, Maria Kiwanuka

This follows a meeting between the government of Uganda and officials from the Tanzania government held last month.

Addressing a news conference, the minister of finance Maria Kiwanuka said that they agreed that there will be no extra costs to be incurred by traders on goods that go through the southern route.

She adds that the non-tariff barriers that have been affecting trade have been minimized to facilitate free movement of goods.

The private sector that has been pushing for this has expressed happiness and optimism.

They had earlier raised concern over the possible effect of the forthcoming Kenyan elections on their businesses.

Families in Busoga region have been urged to maintain cleanliness in their homes if they are to avoid being affected by jiggers.

The call was made by bunya east mp waira Kyewalabye Majegere while expressing concern over the increase of the scourge of jiggers among the population in the areas of Busoga.

Majegere says that it not necessarily needs someone to be rich in order to be clean but the attitude of an individual.

He says that people should try to use traditional means of controlling dust in their houses and schools like the use of cow dung which is cheap rather than waiting for cement which cannot be managed by a poor person.

He says that families and schools should make it a routine and smear their houses once in a week as a way of creating a clean environment in their homes.

Col. Kiiza Besigye, the president general of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has tongue lashed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) describing it as a party for grabbers.

He says that the use of the word grab in relationship to NRM and its top dogs (managers) is no longer surprising to the people of Uganda.

Col. Besigye says that people in NRM grab land from peasants, grab money from the poor, grab donor funds, ‘grab votes.’ Speaking to FDC supporters in Busia, Besigye said that due to corruption in NRM, even women’s body parts may not be safe. This statement caused laughter in the audience.

“Ask the people of Teso or Kitgum where their cattle went and who took it. They will tell you it was grabbed,” he says.

Doctors say that some antiperspirants contain aluminum which may trigger lesions on human body skin. Some deodorants may also trigger asthma attacks or nasal allergies.
Antiperspirants are particularly not recommended because they work by preventing sweating and blocking the pores.
Sweating is one of the body mechanisms that help to control the body temperature. So a normal human being should sweat. Unfortunately on the Ugandan market, non antiperspirants are very few.
So if you are to use antiperspirant, you may apply it directly on the shirt, although this may leave some patches. However if you must use an antiperspirant, a spray would be better compared to a roll-on because with the latter, chances of clogging the pores are twice higher.

The improved seeds or genetically modified seeds are being heavily promoted inUgandawith the support from the Bill Gates Foundations (who are the major shareholders in Monsanto).
The Monsanto is reportedly buying upUgandaorAfrica’s traditional seeds and replacing them with the genetically modified seeds.
If you check in the villages you will find it harder and harder to get traditional African maize, beans and groundnut seeds etc. Monsanto’s seeds don’t produce.
The critics of the genetically modified seeds argue that the new technology is against God’s Nature and that Monsanto activities must be stopped!
InUgandagroups of opinion leaders have come out to expose the companies working with Monsanto in the production of genetically modified seeds.

Master of Physical Land Resources Scholarships: The main subject in Land Resources Engineering offers training in non-agricultural use and application of soil, and includes geotechnical aspects (use of soil as building material or for foundations, slope stability and stability of excavations), the role of soil water and groundwater for water management and supply, and soil management in relation to environment and land use (erosion, sediment transport, coastal development and protection).

It offers a fixed package of courses, all organised at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. All courses have a theoretical and a practical part. Some courses include fieldwork and may be supplemented with excursions.

The first year programme provides for informative and interdisciplinary seminars that allow students to participate actively and work independently. The thesis (second year) must be defended orally, in public before a jury.

Admission requirements:

  • Must be proficient in the language of the course or training programme, i.e. English. With the exception of those who have a diploma (Secondary Education, Academic Bachelor Degree, Master Degree) issued by an institution officially recognized by the Flemish Government, applicants must be able to prove their proficiency in English.
  • Have a basic science training in (1) Mathematics or Statistics and (2) Chemistry or Biochemistry, and an overall academic education background in a relevant discipline like Agriculture, Biology, Forestry, Environment, Land and Water Management, Physical Geography, Geology or Civil Engineering.
  • Relevant research or working experience of about 2 years is recommended but not a prerequisite, unless the former field of study (degree obtained) was not directly relevant for or pertaining to soil science or land resources engineering.

Each application will be evaluated by a board of admission of the specific programme and has to be approved by the Faculty Council and by the Rector’s office.
