Leaders of local NGOs are in fear that the State is after them following the statements raised against the just concluded presidential polls, something they are warning the state not to dear take on as they also call for a special and independent audit into the concluded exercise.

Addressing journalists at UWONET offices, the executive director FIDA Uganda, Irene Ovongi Odida and
Miria Matembe stated that arrests had continued in different parts of the country targeting opposition youth
mainly from the FDC in the guise of cracking down on illegal groups. The women are also challenging the president for inciting violence through the provocative messages he has continued to issue after declaration which to the women are signs of a no good leader. They are now calling  for peaceful means to have reconciliation among the opposition and the sitting party for peace to prevail..

Matembe also expressed misery over the irregularities witnessed in the polls naming incidents in Mbarara at Agip motel where ballot ticking was done on the 17 of February in favor of the incumbent. However they called on Ugandans to participate in the coming polls to elect their leaders.

A number of Women organizations have today come out strongly to defend what they termed as the good record of Parliament Speaker Rebecca Kadaga which they say is being soiled by politicians unhappy about the independent way she is handling parliamentary debates.

Led y the Uganda Women’s Network, the women organsitions said the recent attacks on the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga that she is corrupt are just diversionary and intended to divert the country from serious issues being handled by parliament under the leadership of Kadaga.

The women were reacting to media reports that millions of donor funds were diverted at the time   Kadaga was chairperson of FIDA Uganda.

Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga

The Chief Executive Officer FIDA Dr Maria Nassali told journalists at Parliament that the allegations that her organization lost money is not true and  such allegations were just  malicious to  tarnish the name of Kadaga.

The chairperson of Uganda Women Parliamentary Association Betty Amongi says as women of Uganda they will not allow anyone to derail Kadaga from the cause she has started.

She says it’s surprising for anyone to question the integrity of the Speaker at this time when she is objectively steering parliament and the public has big hope in her to lead the country.

Domestic violence still widespread in Uganda

Uganda Women Network has expressed fears that the Local Council Courts may not be able to appropriately handle cases of domestic violence if the government does not come out to supervise such courts to ensure that they offer the necessary justice in relation to domestic violence.

The newly enacted Domestic Violence Act empowers LC courts to handle domestic violence cases though there have always been fears even before the enactment of the law over the ability of these courts to handle such cases.

UWONET in its information pack on the newly enacted law says since the bill seeks to uphold the protection of human rights that may be violated through domestic violence it is incumbent upon the government to ensure that the LC courts help in achieving this end in their decisions on domestic violence cases rather than impeding the achievement of this end.

UWONET has also appealed to the government to ensure that the bottlenecks in the formal justice system are dealt with such that it can ensure that cases of domestic violence are expeditiously handled to enable the victims of this vice easily get justice.

The Domestic Violence Act requires both the Local Council Courts and the Formal Courts to treat all cases of domestic violence with urgency and requires the courts to have heard such cases within 48 hours.
