Second seed Roger Federer beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-2 6-3 to book a place in the last eight at Wimbledon.

Seven-time champion Federer now needs one more title to break the record he holds with Pete Sampras and Willie Renshaw.

The Swiss did not buy much into his win insisting that it was his opponent who was not at his best.

“I don’t think I made a statement,” said Federer. “I did a nice job making the transition.

“It was a good match. I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Obviously maybe Roberto wasn’t at his very best.”

Federer will next face Gilles Simon for a place in the semi-finals.

In the other games, Swiss fourth seed and French Open champion Stan Wawrinka won 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 to set up a last-eight tie with Richard Gasquet.
