The losers in Monday’s woman MP by elections in Butaleja are planning to sue the electoral commission and the government over vote rigging in favour of the National Resistance Movement candidate Florence Andiru Nebanda. The race attracted five candidates. Others were Sarah Annet Logose (independent), Betty Hamba (Independent), Perusi Munabi (independence) and Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Felistas Namwihiri.

Logose claims that they will file a joint petition in court challenging the outcome of Monday’s voting exercise, alleging that the entire exercise was marred by ballot stuffing, intimidating opposition supporters and brutal arrest of non NRM members. Ms Andiru was declared the winner of the race by the Butaleja district electoral commission, ms Mabel Wakabi.

Ms Wakabi announced that Ms Andiru won the race with 27, 338 votes,  against Ms Betty Hamba’s 12, 157 votes, Sarah Annet Logose’s  3, 393 votes,  Felistas Namwihiri’s 3, 262 votes and Ms Perusi Munabi’s  1, 332 votes. The complaints also claim that the election registered a poor turnout allegedly due to heavy deployment of police and the army.

The former Supreme Court Judge George Kanyeihamba has urged citizens to use their constitutional powers to vote out all corrupt officials from public office.

Kanyeihamba says currently there is no political will in fighting the vice with the judiciary and parliament being influenced by the executive arm of government.

He says the lack of commitment is exhibited in the reluctance to take punitive action against those public officials implicated in corruption scandals.

He adds that it’s only the power of the vote that will save the billions of money lost annually in corruption rated scandals.

Leaders from Kisoro district led by Bufumbira North mp John kamara have threatened not to vote for NRM come 2016 presidential elections if they are not given a district.

The leaders from four sub counties of Bufumbira north say that the area has been marginalized with bad roads and bridges yet it is a tourism center where government collects a lot of revenue for the country.

MP Kamara says the proposed Mutanda district which borders with congo has a number of big markets serving both countries , Bwindi national park , minerals like lime stone and if curved out , they will have the capacity to maintain it.

He says kisoro is now one of the biggest district in the country compared to those that have been curved out.

The mp says that it will be difficult to convince the people to vote for the current government if they are denied a district.

Kamara says he has bought some ambulances for the mothers in the area but they cannot be used because of poor roads.

The electoral commission recently reinstated the Democratic Party’s Brenda Nabukenya as the genuine woman MP for Luweero district. Nabukenya had been declared the winner of the polls after the commission cancelled its earlier call for vote recount.

The National Resistance Movement candidate who was the first runner up, Rebecca Nalwanga in her application, had earlier contested the results declared by the district returning officer, Mr Peter Kasozi.

The district returning officer, Mr. Kasozi says that the vote recount was canceled because some of the ballot boxes were tampered with.

Kasozi says that Section 54 of the Parliamentary Elections Act of 2005 provides for a mandatory vote recount if the number of votes cast of the winning candidate and any other is not above 50.
