Uganda continues to persecute opposition leaders

In what looks like a bid by the government of Uganda to continue with its persecution of opposition leaders, the court in Kampala has declined to drop charges against main opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye and Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.

Lukwago and Dr. Besigye are accused of being members of outlawed activists groups. These two opposition leaders are facing charges related to the activities of the outlawed 4GC (For God and My Country) and Activists for Change groups.

Besigye and Lukwago appeared before Buganda Road court grade one magistrate, Julius Borore for a ruling on an application against being detained for more than 48 hours stipulated in the laws of Uganda.

The trial magistrate declined to refer the matter to the Constitutional   Court  . Prosecution alleges that Besigye and Lukwago on July 19, 2013 conducted themselves as members of the outlawed activist groups.
