Uganda electoral commission to extend voter registration

 

The Electoral Commission will decide next week on whether to extend the period for national voter registration deadline.

There have been calls from various stakeholders including opposition political parties in Uganda for the extension of the voter registration period, considering numerous problems experienced in the registration.

The national voter registration drive started on May 3rd and it is slated to y end on 4th June 2010.

Addressing journalists at the Commission headquarters in Kampala today, the Deputy Chairperson of the commission, Jospeh Biribonwa says the exercise is now improving with more people being registered in different parts of the country.

Biribonwa says the commission has dealt with the challenges that have been slowing the registration process.

He says Uganda Electoral Commission has also started processing payment for the the 8,000 update officers who were recruited recently to carry out the registration throughout the country.
