Uganda Parliament okays Plant and Variety protection bill

The parliamentary committee on agriculture has finalized its public hearing on the plant and variety protection bill 2010.

Speaking after meeting with the state minister of agriculture animal husbandry Bright Rwamirama the committee chairperson Grace Tibwita said that the committee is doing everything possible to see that the bill is presented to parliament for the second reading.

She said that bill is so important and therefore it should be debated and passed by this parliament to avoid other delays which might come with the new parliament.

Meanwhile the minister said that the bill is meant to protect the plants and the rights of the bleeders.

He said that many scientists come up with innovations but these innovations have been smuggled by other commercial bleeders who benefits than the scientists.

The plant variety protection bill, 2010 is aimed at providing for the promotion of development of a new plant varieties and their protection as means of enhancing breeders innovations and rewards through granting of plant breeders rights.
