Uganda prison service commission calls for more funding

The Uganda prison service commission is seeking for more funding to facilitate it in the construction of modern prison facilities across the country.

Frank Baine Mayanja the prison spokesperson says most of the prisons facilities were constructed in 1950s and now are dilapidated. Baine adds that plan to build at least 20 prisons in the five years are under way but this can only be achieved by adequate funding from the government.

He also reviled that congestion in the prison has slightly reduced from 33000 in 2009 to 31000 currently.

Baine however says a lot still needs to be done especially in terms of construction of new facilities to reduce the number inmates to the standard of 13000.
