Uganda women MP’s want UN to ban FGM


Uganda Women Members of parliament have indicated that they will push for the UN to ban the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the coming UN General Assembly slated for September 2010.

The practice which has been practiced in the Eastern Uganda district of Kapchworwa among the Sebei people was recently banned by Uganda Parliament.

The Woman Member of parliament for Bushenyi district, Karooro Okurut says the practice should be banned internationally because it violates women’s rights and leads to some health complications.

In partnership with Uganda women MP’s, Uganda women civil society organizations have also joined the campaign to have the practice banned globally. According to their leader Brenda Nakato Okello, banning the practice will ensure safety of women in other parts of the world.

Okurut who is also the ruling NRM party spokesman says FGM is practiced in more than 25 countries worldwide.
