Hundreds of Ugandans have deserted Hanna Island on Lake Victoria due to an outbreak of meningitis.

Some of the people who have fled the Island include medical personnel at the only health centre on Hanna Island.

Over 75 people have died on Hanna Island since Meningitis hit the area last week.  Hanna Island is in Buhemba Sub County Bugiri District.  

The Sub-county Secretary for Health in Buhemba, John Mbiro says most of the people who have lost their lives since the outbreak are children and women.
