Recently when I saw Nigeria succumb to the thrashing of Greece, I was not shocked at all or not even disappointed in anyway. This is not because I am not a fan of Nigeria or any other African team at the FIFA 2010 world cup. No. In fact if there is any buffoon that is a die hard fan of the African teams at this year’s world cup, then it is I Zak, the son of a Munyoro peasant.

However, one of the reasons why I was not shocked or even disappointed when those Nigerian fellows were beaten for the second time in this year’s world cup, it was just because I am a citizen of a country which last qualified for the African cup of Nations in 1978, 10 years before my flesh and bones were delivered into this world and for the case of world cup not even a single time in the history of this world. Yet every other time our country Uganda participates in these qualification campaigns for World Cup and Africa cup of Nations, but has always failed to qualify just because it loses matches here and there.

So, I have seen Uganda lose over and again while it failed to qualify for such ultimate competitions. True, at first I would get disappointed and shocked when Uganda lost, not until I got used to the losses.

Now, I am so used to losses in football that even if I rallied behind teams like Nigeria in the world cup and all that they did was lose during the competition, I swear I would never be shocked or lose my wits over such stuff of losing that I have seen Uganda do and do quite well.

Nigeria National football team

Moreover some of these teams more so that Nigerian team has started behaving like the way Uganda behaves during the qualification campaigns. I have begun to suspect that these Nigerian fellows must be copying some of the tricks that Uganda uses to ensure that it does not qualify for these prime competitions.

I suspect that must be the reason why the other day Nigeria gave away a 1-0 advantage to those Greek fellows who took advantage and won the match. I hope you all remember that time when Uganda gave away an advantage of similar style some time back to a country called Niger which also went ahead to win the game against Uganda in a qualification campaign.

Then Uganda went ahead to turn its faith and put it in mathematics to qualify for the African Cup of Nations. No wonder mathematics betrayed Uganda even when Uganda won its last match during that qualification campaign. Now after giving away a game to the Greek national football team, Nigeria decided to put its faith in mathematics and hoped that it wins its game against South Korea to have any chance of qualifying for the next round of the World cup. Surely that is copying Uganda’s tricks.

Keep following Zak as he delves into different issues, events and ideas concerning Ugandans with his youthful satire.

The USA national football team managed to hold the England national football team to a 1-1 draw in Group C’s opening match in the ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Stephen Gerrard scored for England

England started on a good note when stand-in captain Steven GERRARD tapped in passed USA custodian Tim HOWARD in the 4th minute after Emile HESKEY set him up with a superb pass in the 4th minute. England seemed to play well for sometime but the USA became comfortable and had their moments of brightness in this highly energetic and speedy match played Saturday evening at Rustenburg stadium.

England’s Goalkeeping woes came to haunt them again when Carpelo’s first choice goal keeper Robert GREEN let in Clint DEMPSEY’s shot that he should have saved comfortably. But he managed to show his value when he made two good saves in the second half.

The English team players did much of what they could but the USA players had many good ideas of their own and were competitive on each part of the pitch up to the end of the match.

The intenseness of the affairs can best be explained by the number of cautions with Referee Carlos Eugenio Simon from Brazil showing the yellow card to England’s Milner, Carragher and Gerrard as well as USA’s DeMerit, Cherundolo and Robbie Findley.

Carpelo brought on Shaun WRIGHT-PHILLIPS for Milner in the 30th Minute, Carragher for King at the break and Peter Crouch for Hesky but they were unable to have an impact on the final score.

The result of a draw will put big pressure on Carpelo whose controversial decisions like leaving behind Theo Walcott in favour of David Beckham or playing Robert Green instead of David James in the England goal are a big subject of the English press.

So the big boys USA and England in Group C have failed to take maximum points and handed the mantle to Algeria and Slovenia who each have a chance to take the lead when they play on Sunday afternoon South Africa time.

USA has come to South Africa 2010 World Cup on a high notch having enjoyed a good qualifying experience. The United States emerged first in the final six-team Hexagonal phase of North, Central America and Caribbean Zone qualifying rounds.

USA coach Bob Bradley has established himself as a good instructor and has brought the USA once known soccer minors into the major limelight, with key results in the Confederation cup played in South Africa in 2009 where they beat favourites Spain 3-0 before succumbing to Brazil by a narrow 3-2 margin in the finals.

USA national soccer football team

“We’re very proud to have finished at the top of the final Hexagonal. It was a great effort and required a great deal of determination on our team’s part. Every time we took the field we spoke about proving to the world what we were capable of and I think we did just that,” says Bob Bradley, USA coach.

Playing in Group C where they are pitted against England, Slovenia and Algeria, the USA might as well fancy their chances to reach the last 16, if only they work as hard and disciplined as they have shown they can in the past few years.

Star Key players of USA soccer Team in FIFA 2010 World Cup
The USA will still look to the excellent services of Landon Donovan who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy because of his excellent form in recent years. Providing an impressive supporting cast are the likes of Oguchi Onyewu, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey, all of whom are plying their trade on in Europe and their experience will be to USA success in South Africa.
Previous USA FIFA World Cups

• The United States have taken part at nine FIFA World Cups, with Mexico the only CONCACAF team involved in more editions of the showpiece event.
• The Stars and Stripes’ best finals performance came at Uruguay 1930, when they exited at the semi-final stage.
• South Africa 2010 will be the United States’ sixth consecutive finals appearance. At Germany 2006 they bid farewell to the tournament at the first hurdle.

USA Records at FIFA World Cup
• The United States’ 2-0 victory over Spain at South Africa 2009 prevented La Roja extending their 35-game unbeaten run, a record they hold jointly with Brazil.
• The USA had enjoyed a 58-match unbeaten home streak against CONCACAF opponents until July 2009, when arch-rivals Mexico thrashed them 5-0 in the final of the Gold Cup.
• Altidore, currently on loan at English Premier League outfit Hull City from Villarreal, was the Stars and Stripes’ six-goal top scorer in qualifying.

England is coming to South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup with a lot to prove. With the English Premier League being a dominant football arena, and England itself having some of the most well-known football players in the world, many are eager to see what England can achieve.

England National Football team

England will be cognizant of the fact that they have not won the world cup on colour television despite enjoying generations of dominant teams only to fail to deliver at the big tournaments as we can remember their poor performance at the  UEFA EURO 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. But they have the kind of squad with the skill and experience to overturn any bad record and South Africa will be the venue for England to show their true soccer credentials.

With an experienced Coach and disciplinarian in Fabio Capello, England have their hopes high, but must overcome USA in the opening game on Saturday June 12 and get good results against Slovenia and Algeria, their other Group C competitors.

Having stormed the South Africa World Cup finals with no fewer than nine wins from ten Group 6 games in their qualifiers, scoring  total of 34 goals, England should have good reason to expect to achieve more.

Star players of England at the 2010 World Cup

England are blessed with the services of players like Manchester United forwards Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, the  midfield duo of Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, as well as inspirational Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, among others.

Previous England Performance FIFA World Cups
England have appeared at 11 previous editions of the World Cup, including their debut at Brazil 1950. Victors on home soil in 1966, their best performance outside their own shores came under the late Sir Bobby Robson at Italy 1990, when a side featuring the likes of Gary Lineker, Chris Waddle, Paul Gascoigne and David Platt reached the last four only to lose out on penalties to eventual winners West Germany.

Records of England and FIFA World Cup
The 1-0 loss in Ukraine on 10 October 2009 ended a run of ten consecutive victories in FIFA World Cup qualification, which England had begun with a 1-0 win over Austria in Manchester on 8 October 2005.

The Three Lions’ leading scorer in qualifying, Wayne Rooney, was at his most dangerous between the 72nd and 76th minutes of play, during which period he scored no fewer than four times.

The Argentina national football Team begun their 2010 World Cup campaign on a good note with a consistent display against the Nigeria National football team whom they beat 1-0 in the second Group B match played at Johannesburg – JEP stadium.

Though the Argentinians were far from superb overall, they managed to outplay and outmatch the Super Eagles of Nigeria from the onset and it wasn’t long before their efforts showed on the score line.

Gabriel Heinze scored the only goals as Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0

The Argentinians dictated their ambitions with an early goal in the 6th minute when Defender Gabriel HEINZE headed in the corner past Nigeria keeper Vincent ENYEAMA. The Nigerian experienced custodian who plays his club football with Hapoel Tel-Aviv in Israeli had to be at his best to stop a super effort from Argentina key forward Lionel MESSI towards the end of the 1st half, and again in the 82nd minute when Messi was clear to score and Enyeama produced the save of match.

Though he had his shining moments, Lionel MESSI’s threat was kept to minimal by the Nigerian left back Taye TAIWO who trades his professional football at Marseille in France. Nigerian captain Joseph YOBO was also exceptional in his defense at this Saturday match and showed why he continues to be a major man at English Premiership side Everton.

While the Argentinians played stable and superb passes, the Nigerian defense was able to keep them at reasonable bay and the Nigerians had their own superb displays, giving further evidence why they are the only African team to have reached the last 16 of the Word Cup twice in 1994 and 1998.

Nigerian Coach Lars LAGERBACK brought on Obafemi MARTINS in the early hours of the second half to increase the striking force upfront to partner Yakubu AIYEGBENI and Chinedu OGBUKE OBASI and they did put more pressure on the Argentinians. Even the introduction of Lokomotiv Moscow striker Peter ODEMWINGIE didn’t give the Super Eagles match leverage to change the score line although they kept the Argentinians on their toes up to the end of the 4 added minutes.

Argentina who have lifted the World cup twice in 1978 and 1986 stood their ground and managed to secure a win that makes them joint Group B leaders with Korea Republic who beat Greece 2-0 in the earlier Group B match played at Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth stadium.

The Nigerians will be very concerned with the loss of key defender Taye TAIWO who was replaced by midfielder Kalu UCHE after he injured his foot in one of Nigeria’s best attempt at goal in the 72nd minute. Uhce wasted Nigeria’s good chance to make matters even when he split the ball wide while Martins had Nigeria’s best chance when his powerful shot in the 78th minutes was parted by the Argentine keeper Diego POZO.

Nigeria will still fancy their chances as they face reasonably lesser opponents in Greece and Korea Republic but they will need to find their scoring form in both two Group B matches to be able to qualify to the last 16.

Argentina are still among the top favourites to win the 2010 world Cup  despite having struggled to reach the finals in South Africa. The 1978 and 1986 world cup champions are hoping to build on the morale of their world cup hero now Argentina Coach, Diego Maradona to lift the World cup trophy.

Argentia national football team

Maradona’s task is made easier by the fact that he has a star-studded squad at his disposal, one that features several survivors of the team that reached the quarter-finals at Germany 2006, not to mention Lionel Messi and a host of other young stars with several youth titles to their name. Given that roll call, the Argentinians appear to have the resources to atone for recent disappointments and win the country’s first international trophy since the Copa America in 1993.

The star players of Argentina at 2010 FIFA World Cup
Many Argentina fans are putting their hopes in Lionel Messi, widely regarded as the best footballer in the world. Having earned that reputation thanks to his consistently brilliant performances for Barcelona, La Pulga (The Flea) has yet to fire on a regular basis in the famous blue and white striped shirt, something he will be hoping to make amends for in South Africa.

Providing the midfield ballast for the darting Messi will be their captain and driving force Javier Mascherano and the hugely experienced Juan Sebastian Veron, who will be out to prove a point or two after coming in for criticism during Argentina’s fateful display at Korea/Japan 2002. With other big names like Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito and a host of others, Argentina will have every reason to top the Group B in which they play Nigeria, Korea Republic and Greece.

Previous FIFA World Cups
– Argentina have reached four FIFA World Cup Finals in all. They beat Netherlands in 1978 and Germany in 1986 but lost to Uruguay in 1930 and to the Germans in 1990.
La Albiceleste will be appearing in the FIFA World Cup for the 20th time at South Africa 2010, their tenth consecutive appearance.
– Set to make his first appearance as a coach, Diego Maradona played in four successive finals competitions between 1982 and 1994.

Nigeria has traditionally held a special place in Africa football, holding the hope of Africa’s success in the World Cup but recent years have diminished that hope.

Nigeria National football team

The Super Eagles as the Nigeria national football team is referred to have always been reach with exceptional talent but have performed minimally as a team in many international competitions, although they have been traditional qualifiers for the World Cup finals.

Many Nigeria fans will love to remember their exploits at USA 94, where they dismantled eventual semi-finalists Bulgaria 3-0 in their first match before going on to cruelly fall 2-1 against Italy in the second round. A similarly quick start in 1998 – they stunned Spain 3-2 in one of the matches of the tournament to start and beat Bulgaria again 1-0 – gave way to another second round defeat, this time a disheartening thumping at the hands of Denmark 4-1. But the Nigeria Team of today has no Sunday Oliseh, Victor Ikpeba, Jay-Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Celestine Babayaro, Omokocha or the Nwanko Kanu at his prime.

“We know that we will have a tough job at the World Cup. We are up against some tough teams like Argentina, with top players like [Lionel] Messi. It’s important for us to prove that we can play our own game against the best,” says Nigeria forward Chinedu Obasi.

The current Nigeria team is not short on talent, but their near failure to qualify for South Africa 2010 will give them less pressure as they look to get out of their Group B where they entertain Argentina on Saturday and later Korea Republic and Greece.

Even without the big names of the 90s, the Super Eagles have the ability to score a lot of goals in South Africa behind a pacy, dynamic attack that features the likes of Obafemi Martins, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Peter Odemwingie as well as youngsters Victor Obinna and Ikechukwu Uche and evergreen Nwankwo Kanu in what is surely his last role of the dice. They won’t be a soft touch behind that either, with Jon Obi Mikel anchoring the midfield, and captain Joseph Yobo in the centre of defence.

Nigeria’s Record
• Nigeria’s 3-0 waltz over Bulgaria in their USA 94 debut match was more remarkable given that the Europeans went on to beat Greece, Argentina, Mexico and Germany in the tournament.

• Since Clemens Westerhof built the 1994 side and left the Super Eagles, the team has been coached by such well-known European journeymen as Jo Bonfrere, Philippe Troussier, Bora Milutinovic and Berti Vogts.

• Nigeria have a rich history at other worldwide tournaments, having won the 1985, 1993 and 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup as well as the 1996 Olympic Football Tournament.

The Korea Republic National team took their soccer dominance beyond Asia on Saturday afternoon by beating the Greece National Football team 2-0 in their Group B opening match on the second day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa.

The South Korea football team put themselves in vintage position gaining maximum points as they await results of the other Group B contenders Nigeria and Argentina.

Korea Republic got a well deserved lead goal by LEE Seung Yeoul in the 7th minute in the match played at Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth stadium in the heat of Saturday afternoon in front of 30,150 crowd.

The Koreans were not necessarily impressive but showed more purpose than the Greeks who looked unprepared for Korean challenges on this afternoon.

PARK Ji Sung scored second goal for Korea

The Korea Republic team added to their dominance and advantage in the 53rd minute when Manchester United winger PARK Ji Sung took a superb shot past Greece goalkeeper Alexandros TZORVAS. The South Koera captain PARK Ji Sung was instrumental throughout the match delivering defense splitting passes through the Greece midfield and defense and could have seen his team win by a bigger margin on a luckier day.

Korea Republic Coach HUH Jung Moo was the happy man of the evening as he watched the South Korean team create and take important chances and the South Korea defense contain the threats from the experienced Greece team.

Greece who upped their soccer credentials by winning the UEFA EURO 2004 cup tried some advanced pressure in the second half but did little to permeate the determined Korea defense, which kept Korea keeper JUNG Sung Ryong with less trouble.

Greece Coach Otto REHHAGEL will need to ransack the best items in his tactics bag if he is to help Greece appearing at the World Cup finals for the second time to win the remaining two matches against Nigeria and Argentina in the remaining two Group B games and be able to go beyond the group stages.

Korea Republic is arguably Asia’s most successful football team and they must rise to that billing at the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup. But with opponents such as Argentina, Nigeria and Greece in their Group B, Korea Republic also known as South Korea will need more than their credentials in Asia to shine at this biggest world soccer event in South Africa.

Korea Republic national football team

Korea Republic may have qualified for their seventh consecutive world cup finals, but it was a bumpy ride this time. Despite a series of lacklustre performances in the third round, the South Koreans managed to top their group after two goalless draws with neighbours Korea DPR. The North Koreans proved to be their nemesis again in the final round, holding the Taeguk Warriors to a 1-1 stalemate in Shanghai. However, they bounced back in style with back-to-back wins over United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, before a crucial 1-1 draw with Iran in Tehran. A 1-0 home victory in the Korean derby followed, and the mission was accomplished with a 2-0 win against UAE on the road.

Star players of Koera Republic at 2010 FIFA World Cup
Manchester United winger Park Ji-Sung has played a key role in Korea Republic’s two previous FIFA World Cup campaigns and established himself as the captain of his country in recent years. The multifunctional winger of Manchester United is now an indispensible member of the Taeguk Warriors as his South Korea side are known as.

A clinical forward, Park Chu-Young is widely tipped as the one to solve the problem in front of goal. After a below-par performance against Switzerland at Germany 2006, the Monaco marksman is eager to redeem himself in the national team as the No10 prepares for his second appearance at the showpiece event at the age of 24.

But the other factor will be their coach Huh Jung-Moo whose appointment in December 2007 put an end to the Dutch influence under the likes of Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat. Despite a sluggish start in the Asian Zone qualifying, the former Korea Republic midfielder silenced his critics by guiding his experimental side into the finals with two games to spare.

Having scored a goal against Italy at Mexico 1986, he is no stranger to this stage as he also took part in Italy 1990 and USA 1994 as fitness trainer and assistant coach respectively. Huh was an interim coach of Korea Republic twice before, and led the U-23 side at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Sydney 2000.

“This will be the last chapter in my football life. I will put in all my energy to achieve good results in the World Cup,”  Jung-Moo said in a recent interview.

Korea Republic Records at FIFA World Cup

  • Korea Republic are the most frequent visitors from Asia to the FIFA World Cup, and are set to make their eighth appearance this time in South Africa.
  • The best result the Taeguk Warriors have achieved so far was at Korea/Japan 2002, where they swept past European powerhouses Portugal, Italy, and Spain to reach the last four.
