The 31 year old started on a good pace but finally lost to 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2.

Murray had the crowd hail support on him when he won the third and fourth sets.

“If this was my last match, it was an amazing way to end,” he said.

“I gave everything I had – it wasn’t enough tonight.“

Murray hinted about retirement on Friday last week when he would end his career soon due to chronic hip problem.

However after the loss to Bautista, Murray hinted at a possible come back in his on-court interview.

“Maybe I’ll see you again. I’ll do everything possible to try,” said an emotional Murray after an epic match which lasted four hours and nine minutes.

“If I want to go again, I’ll need to have a big operation, which there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to come back from anyway, but I’ll give it my best shot.“

“It was much better, just in terms of the way I actually played the match,” said the Scot, 31.

“Regardless of the result, we wanted to at least be dictating more points, trying to use my forehand, be closer to the baseline.

“I think I did that, especially in some of the important moments in the third set. I was being more offensive.”

Edmund beat Murray at Eastbourne in June – in the third match of his return during the grass-court season – before the world number 832 pulled out of Wimbledon.

Edmund, 23, said: “I gave my best of what I had on the day, it just didn’t work out. It would have been nice to hold serve and maybe even control what I can and take [the third set] to a tie-break but it didn’t happen.”

Defending champion and world number three Alex Zverev beat Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri 6-2 6-1 and will play his brother Mischa in the third round.

After five years together on the ATP Tour, this will be their first meeting on court. “It’s going to be very interesting for me. It will be a special day,” said Alex Zverev. “Not many families can say they have two players playing at this level.”

Belgian third seed David Goffin survived a scare against France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert to win 6-2 1-6 7-6 (7-5) while Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat American qualifier Donald Young for the second year in a row, winning 6-3 6-4.

He will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the next round, while Goffin plays American Frances Tiafoe. Fifth seed Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament with a hip injury, having retired during his Atlanta Open quarter-final last week.

Elsewhere, British number two Cameron Norrie is through to the quarter-finals of the Los Cabos Open in Mexico, following a 6-3 6-3 victory over Spanish eighth seed Feliciano Lopez. Norrie, 22, will play Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the last eight.

The world’s third seed had a solid performance while eliminating Vasek Pospisil who is ranked number 56 in the world and will take on second seed Roger Federer in the last four on Friday.

Murray, 28, had to bear with two rain delays, the second of which saw the roof brought across in the second set.

“It was difficult, we were stopped a couple of times,” said Murray.

“I felt I played some good stuff. He served extremely well for periods. I tried to change my return position at the end of the second set to see the returns better.”

The Scot is set for a 24th meeting with Federer hoping to have a great match; he said “I know Roger very well, we walked to the practice courts together this morning.

“Friday is a different story and hopefully we can have a great match.”

In the other match Seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer cruised past France’s Gilles Simon winning  6-3 7-5 6-2 in one hour and 34 minutes.

The world’s second seed also experienced two rain interruptions on Court One.

Federer who last won the Wimbledon title in 2012 beating Murray in the final stressed how hard their tie will be, the Swiss said,

“We both like to look back on that summer of 2012,” He added, “If we knew beforehand that I would win Wimbledon and him the Olympics, I think we both would have taken it. It was a great summer for us.

“I am happy for him, he is doing so well after his back surgery. People forget how hard it is to get back from injury and get back into contention to win tournaments.

“Friday will be a tough one for me but I am obviously looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile defending champion Novak Djokovic will play Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the other Wimbledon semi-finals.

The world number one Djokovic had an easy ride against Croatia’s Marin Cilic winning 6-4 6-4 6-4.

“It was a very solid performance after a tough five-set match against Kevin in the fourth round,” Djokovic said.

In the other game, Gasquet beat French Open champion Stan Wawrinka 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-4 11-9 in an exciting five-set match.

Gasquet will take on his nemesis Djokovic whom he has got a poor record against having lost 12 of his 13 matches.

The Frenchman said: “It will be tough but I’m happy with how I’ve played.

“I’ll try to play my best again against the best player in the world.”

The second-seeded Swiss took 68 minutes to eliminate 88th-ranked Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. “I was happy I played aggressive,” he said. “I must say I’m very happy, always, to win like that.” Nadal, a two-time champion, sailed to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. Meanwhile Eugenie Bouchard reportedly received a dress code violation after her black bra strap became visible during her match against Duan Ying ying at Wimbledon 2015. The issue arose when chair umpire Louise Engzell spotted the black strap midway through her first round match-up. Engzell phoned the tournament referee who questioned Bouchard on court about her dress code.

The All England club’s dress code states that: “Competitors must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white and this applies from the point at which the player enters the court surround.”

Bouchard joins the list of big name players to have been scrutinized by the All England Club’s captious authorities with Wimbledon legend Roger Federer having banned from wearing white shoes with orange soles during the 2013 tournament.
Bouchard-last year’s Wimbledon finalist, went to lose to Duan 7-6 6-4, meaning she has tasted defeat in 12 out of her 14 matches in 2015.
In the other women events, defending champion Petra Kvitova began her title defence with a 6-1 6-0 win over Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in only 35 minutes.

The Swiss who is seeded eight played brilliantly in a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 victory at Roland Garros.

Wawrinka, 30, brought an end to Djokovic’s 28-match winning run as he claimed his second Grand Slam title.

Djokovic harbored hopes of becoming the eighth man to complete the set of all four major titles were not achieved.

This means the serb will have to wait for atleast another 12 months before attempting to match the full set of major titles collected by Andre Agassi, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Roger Federer, Rod Laver, Rafael Nadal and Fred Perry.

Djokovic went into the final as an overwhelming favourite after he had eliminated nine-time champion Rafael Nadal and third seed Andy Murray, but he was outclasses by Wawrinka.

“It was an incredible atmosphere on court and I felt emotion like I never have before,” said Wawrinka.

“I would like to thank my coach Magnus Norman. You played in the final without winning but this victory is yours as well as mine.”

Djokovic congratulated the champion pointing out wawrinka’s character and respect, “There are things that are more important in life than victories and that is character and respect – Stan you are a great champion with big heart.”

The champion pointed out how one day his counter-part Djokovic will win the Roland Garros.

“One day, you will win Roland Garros,” Wawrinka told the serb during the post-match ceremony. “You deserve it.”

Wawrinka was making his 11th French Open appearance, equaling Federer and Andre Agassi for most attempts before winning it.

The victory makes him only the second Swiss to win at Roland Garros after Roger Federer, the man he beat in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile fourteen-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal has dropped to 10th in the latest world rankings - his lowest position in more than a decade. The Spaniard, 29, has fallen after losing to world number one Novak Djokovic in the French Open quarter-finals last week.
