The second of the Sustainable Development Goal developed in 2015 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. The Global Hunger Index combined the four component indicators of Undernourishment; Child wasting; Child stunting; and Child mortality to come up with accurate conclusions on hunger.

Countries’ hunger levels were rated as Low, Moderate, Serious, Alarming, and Extremely Alarming. Hunger levels were found still serious or alarming in 50 countries the highest of which are found in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia. Highest hunger levels were found in Central African Republic (with a score of 46.1) followed by Chad (44.3); lowest hunger levels were found in Argentina (<5) followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (<5). The regional countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda were rated Serious with Tanzania having the highest levels scoring at 28.4. Rwanda was at 27.4, Uganda 26.4 and the least being Kenya with 21.9.

The report notes that the decline in hunger must accelerate in these regions if the world is to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030.

The tortoises that had been concealed in sacks  were displayed by URA officials at the media conference in Kampala.

The assistant commissioner enforcement at URA Agnes Nabwire said that there are laws that protect the movement of wildlife.

“If the people had proper documentation, why did they have to conceal them in sacks?”she said as she handed the tortoises back to UWA officials.

The suspects claimed that the tortoises were being transported to a local sanctuary in Mbale for breeding.

“We suspect that they were being transported to the black market either in Kampala or be exported. They are highly valuable in Asian and Chinese communities for food and the shells can be crushed into powder for medicinal purposes,” UWA public relations manager Jossy Muhangi said.

He added that there are currently no permits to export tortoises.

The tortoises are to be returned to Nakapiripirit.

According to UWA officials, during the rainy season the tortoises often roam around on flat lands like Karamoja, which makes it easy for them to be picked.

Uganda can now boost of oil production engineers to help the country exploit the oil resources confirmed in different parts of the country.

According to a media statement, the group of 10 underwent 6-10 months hands-on training in the United Kingdom and at the Bangladesh production facility where they were exposed to areas such as oil and gas separation, gas dehydration, natural gas liquids recovery, fractional distillation, oil pumping and metering, injection and water treatment, as well as environment health safety management.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship – Asia: Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, Google are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Asia.

Through the scholarship, Google aims to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female undergraduate and graduate student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool.

Each scholarship recipient will receive a $3500 scholarship. In addition all finalists and scholarship recipients will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Center in Korea for a networking retreat.

It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.

Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible:

• Be a female student enrolled in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at an university
• Be enrolled at an University in any of the following countries: Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply
• Be studying Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field
• Maintain an excellent academic record.

Scholarship finalists and scholars are invited to an expenses paid retreat held in Korea in early August. In addition to free time for sightseeing and socializing, the formal part of the retreat typically includes:

• Welcome meal and tour of Google;
• Informal ice breaker activities and introductions;
• Introduction to the Anita Borg Institute and the scholarship program;
• Personal insights, technical talks, and workshops.

Applications for the Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship will be open in Spring.

People in possession of pangolin (Lugave in Luganda) scales now have all reasons to smile as a kilogramme of its scales costs 2.5 million shillings.

The pangolin scales have a big market in China and India where the manufacturers there use them to make jewelries, ornaments and hand-held weapons. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Spokesperson Ms Lilian Nsubuga says that because of the high demand for pangolin scales in Asia, China and Europe the pangolin population in Uganda and Africa at large is under threat.

In China and Asia the remains of pangolin population are reportedly used in the manufacture of traditional medicine that prolong a man’s erection, and prolong love.

Pangolins are small, squirrel-size animals whose bodies are covered with big scales which are as hard as ivory, tortoise cell or rhino horn.

In Uganda a kilogramme of pangolin scales costs between 50,000 to 100,000 shillings and at the world market the same kilogramme costs $1,000 (about 2.5 Uganda million shillings).
