Indian Prime minister, Nandera Modi, has arrived in Uganda  for two days visit before flying to South Africa for the 10th Brazil, Russia,India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit.

Modi’s visit is intended to strengthen the ties between Uganda and India that were damaged during Idd Amins regime as well as removing the imbalances in trade between the two countries.

According to the ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Patrick Mugoya, the discussions will entail the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoU) in areas of cooperation between Uganda and India.

“It is an important visit in the Uganda-India relations at the highest level,” Mr Mugoya said told daily monitor.

These mainly include energy, visa relinquishment for holders of diplomatic and official passports, cultural cooperation and exchange programmes, film production, defence, ICT and establishment of a regional materials testing laboratory in Uganda. (Daily monitor, July, 24)

The major imports from India to Uganda are pharmaceuticals, veterinary products, oils, distillation products, electrical, iron and steel, stationery products, among others.

A credit sum of $141m (Shs523b) for extension of electricity lines and construction of substations, and $64m (Shs237b) for agriculture and diary production as a way of mending the bi-lateral relations of the two nations.

Mr Modi will then, in the evening, address and engage the Indian community of over 1000 people in Uganda at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Before departing to South Africa, Mr Modi will speak to the India-Uganda business forum at Kampala Serena Hotel and afterwards address Parliament.

Andrew Tugume, a student of Mengo Senior Secondary School  is set to represent Uganda in this year’s  World International  Mathematical contest that is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 12th to 23rd July.

This is an annual event for World  Championships  Mathematics Competitions for High School  students that attracts students from different countries.

The African queen the distributor of the Bic pen in Uganda has decided to sponsor this student to attend the competition after he was selected among  the best in Ugandan mathematical contestants recently.

While handing over the air ticket to Tugume at Mengo Senior Secondary School,the Managing Director African Queen, Phiona Kanyike, said that they have decided to sponsor this student as a way to encourage more students to excel in mathematics subject

Siemens Energy has received an order to deliver 63 of its SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines for five wind power plants in Brazil. The wind turbines have a rating of 2.3 megawatts (MW) and a rotor diameter of 101 meters.

Purchaser is the utility Tractebel Energia, headquartered in Florianópolis, Brazil. After commissioning in late 2012, the combined capacity of the five projects will be 145 MW. Four of the wind power plants are located in the state of Ceará and one in Piauí in northeastern Brazil.

“This is the third order in the last six months Siemens has received for wind turbines from Brazil,” said Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit. “This demonstrates the confidence our customers have in our technology and in our commitment to a successful internationalization strategy.”

In Latin America, Brazilis is considered to be a key wind market. Experts estimate that up to five gigawatts of wind power will be installed by 2015.

Internationalization is a key pillar of Siemens’ strategy in the wind business. In addition to opening two new factories in the U.S. and China at the end of 2010, the company has also announced plans for new factories or the extension of supply chain management in Canada, theUnited Kingdom,India,RussiaandBrazil.

Wind energy is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies.
