In 2001, the e8 established as a pilot project, a scholarship program to encourage and support the study of sustainable energy development in the world.

These scholarships were made available to outstanding students from developing countries and economies in transition for a period of up to two years in the Masters.

Energy Education Development (ESED) was selected by the e8 theme for the 2004-2005 year presidency. The year 2005 marked the beginning of the United Nations Decade for Education and therefore was an opportunity to e8 leadership and profile in the field of education with a focus on sustainable energy development. A report ESED e8 in Africa, Asia and Latin America provide the basis for selection.

In 2004, the Fellowship Program was evaluated and a comprehensive assessment of options for support ESED prepared. The e8 members decided to establish a five-year Programme of Action, which consists of the following programs:

  • ESED Scholarship Program
  • Scholars Network
  • Internships

Scholarship Description: The PhD project forms part of a larger project dealing with the spectroscopic investigation of chemical dynamics in liquids and solutions under the title: “Femtosecond Soft X-ray Spectroscopy of Matter under Realistic Conditions”. The aim is to drive the development of soft X-ray scattering of electron and configuration dynamics of biological relevant systems towards a routinely applicable method.

The technology employed is resonant spectroscopy at the K-edges of Carbon, Oxygen and other chemical relevant elements. This method is available only at accelerator based light-sources, mainly synchrotrons but also the new free-electron lasers. The PhD candidate will be enrolled at Uppsala University, but located at MAX-lab in Lund (Sweden). A part of the experimental work will most likely be performed at other places, e.g. at BESSY in Berlin or SLS/PSI in Switzerland.

The Department of Civil Engineering/David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability is offering scholarships to attract the very best students to our innovative MSc and MRes courses. MPhil degrees are also eligible.

Strathclyde is a leading technological University and the Department of Civil Engineering has unique postgraduate programmes on offer: the MSc in Environmental Entrepreneurship is the first in Europe; the MSc in Environmental Forensics is supported by the best-equipped environmental forensics labs in the UK; and the syllabus of the MSc in Geotechnics has been designed in consultation with industry to incorporate the most modern methods of analysis, using industry-standard software, such as PLAXIS, ReWard and GeoSlope.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Clyde Waterfront Regeneration and the Sustainable Glasgow Programme make Glasgow a ‘happening place’ for the study of Civil Engineering and environmental-related topics. With its vibrant City Centre location and easy access to stunning Scottish countryside, the University of Strathclyde is the ideal place to undertake a one-year postgraduate degree.

Prestigious £1,000 International Excellence Awards

These prestigious awards are on offer to well-qualified excellent international applicants (non-EU) for the following degrees:
MSc Environmental Engineering
MSc Environmental Entrepreneurship – first in Europe
MSc Environmental Forensics – first in the UK
MSc Environmental Health
MSc Environmental Science
MSc Sustainability & Environmental Studies
MSc Geotechnics – in partnership with industry
MSc Hydrogeology
MRes Geo-Environmental Engineering
MRes Infrastructure Adaptation for Climate Change
MRes Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC)

Successful recipients will benefit from a £1,000 award towards tuition fees. The deadline for Excellence Award applications is expected to be end of May 2011.

Fees-Only Excellence Awards for UK/EU students

are on offer for the following degrees:
MPhil
MRes Geo-Environmental Engineering
MRes in Infrastructure Adaptation for Climate Change
MRes Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC)

The closing date for applicants for “Fees-Only” awards will be confirmed shortly.

What does “Fees-Only” mean?
For session 2010-11 the full-time home/EU fees are £3,400 (part-time are half of this amount over two years, subject to any increase in session 2011-12.)

How to apply?

In order to be eligible for any one of these prestigious awards, all you need to do is apply online for your chosen course, via the link provided in the individual web page for each degree. Please make sure your application is complete and includes evidence of previous degree qualification, two references (academic/employer) and proof of English language if applicable. In addition, please attach a one A4 page Supporting Statement covering these two points:

Why do you want to take this postgraduate degree and how will the degree support your career goals?
What makes you ‘excellent’ that justifies you getting one of these Excellence Awards?
The awards will be allocated based on quality, but applying early increases your chances of receiving one of these awards. Applicants with the equivalent to a 1st class honours UK degree (70% or above) will be prioritised, but applicants with the equivalent to a high 2.1 honours UK degree (65-69%) and/or with relevant professional experience may also be considered.

If an applicant is selected to receive an award, the award will only be given once the applicant has registered with the University and has commenced the degree. Allocation of an Excellence Award can only be given to candidates who have not already accepted another scholarship through the University.

The closing date for applications for all Excellence Awards is expected to be late May 2011.

If you have any questions or wish to email your one page statement directly, please contact Pippa Tawse: T: +44 (0)141 548 3170; E: pippa.tawse@strath.ac.uk

What is the difference between an MRes, an MSc or an MPhil?

An MSc is 67% Taught (120 credits of taught classes) and 33% Project (worth 60 credits). While an MRes is 33% Taught (60 credits of taught classes) and 67% Project (worth 120 credits). On successful completion of the MRes research project it is possible for good quality researchers to transfer to the PhD Programme (i.e. the MRes would be equivalent to the first year of the PhD).

Our MRes are aimed principally at graduates in civil and environmental engineering, earth sciences, bioscience, chemistry and chemical engineering. However the programme has also been successfully completed by others from an unrelated background such as business.

An MPhil has the same duration as the other degrees (one year) but is 100% research. There are no taught credits. Topic is chosen from Civil Engineering, Environment and/or Sustainability with the agreement of your supervisor.

Disclaimer: Only students who meet the quality criteria will be eligible and the Department reserves the right not to allocate all the awards if insufficient quality applicants apply.

The Latin American School of Medical Sciences Undergraduate Scholarships 2010, Cuba

The Latin American School of Medical Sciences Scholarships are for undergraduate study in medicine offered by the Cuba government.

Applicants need to be high school graduates, 18 to 25 years old, from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The ability to speak Spanish is not required. Students who do not speak spanish spend upto four months immersed in the language after arriving in Havana.

The Latin American School of Medical Sciences (LASMS) educates a minimum of 500 doctors each year — for free.

The program of The Latin American School of Medical Sciences is based on intensive advising and tutoring designed to help every student succeed.

Students must pass competency exams at appropriate points in their course of study.

The six-year medical school program, begins every September and is divided into 12 semesters.

Students study at the LASMS campus for the first two years, and then go to another of Cuba’s 21 medical schools, which are located throughout the island, to complete their studies.

The Cuban medical training model combines theory and practice and is oriented toward primary care, community medicine and hands-on internships.

In order to register and get a scholarship in the Latin American School of Medical Sciences (Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina – ELAM) interested candidates must go to the Cuban diplomatic missions in their respective countries and ask for the information.
