Epilepsy can lead to sudden change in brain function resulting as a physical convulsion, and altered mental state. It is defined as a state of recurrent seizures. But in this article, our health expert Walakira Nyanzi will dwell much on the causes of epilepsy. The causes of epilepsy are mainly genetic/ hereditary.

The scientists, researchers and doctors tell us that the causes of epilepsy include:

-Thyroid disease

-Congenital brain malformations

-Genetic factors

-Metabolic and toxic conditions

-Alcohol withdrawal

-Withdrawal of sedating drugs

-Electrolyte abnormalities and

-Stress

-Peri-natal and intra-natal conditions

-Infections of the nervous system

-High fever especially in children under five years

-Hypoxic brain injury especially in infants

-Strokes

-Head injuries

-Eclampsia in pregnancy.

Epilepsy is also called a seizure in the medical language. It is caused by abnormal and excessive electrical activity within a human brain cells.

Medical doctors say that epilepsy can lead to sudden change in brain function resulting as a physical convulsion, and altered mental state.

The signs, disturbance and symptoms of epilepsy depend on which part of the brain has been affected. Dr. Edward Ddumba, a Senior consultant neurologist at  Nsambya Hospital  defines epilepsy as a state of recurrent seizures.

There are three main classification of epilepsy: simple partial, complex partial and generalized epilepsy. Simple partial epilepsy is defined as consciousness where a patient exhibits abnormal motor, sensory or autonomic abnormalities.

Complex partial epilepsy is impaired consciousness is impaired where a patient develops abnormal movements and behaviour. The epileptics with this type of disease experiences tonic-clonic movements of the limbs, tongue biting and incontinence of urine.

Many epileptics secretly suffer sexual problems but it is said that they fear to discuss them in public. Some of these problems in some cases are triggered by epilepsy medication while others are a result of general conditions associated epilepsy.

Dr. Ddumba Edward, Senior consultant neurologist, Nsambya Hospital

in Kampala says that many epileptics have big sexual problems that naturally interfere with their intimacy. The doctor says that many epileptics can not sustain an erection for long, therefore having their partners sexually starved.

He says that some epileptics lose interest in the sex. This, plus erectile dysfunction issues affect their self-esteem as adults. Some of the people suffering from epilepsy try to play sex with housemaids or houseboys to prove their strength, although this doesn’t help them much.

The epileptics suffer from stigma and many of them lack self-confidence and this affects their sexual performance. Doctors also tell us that the anti-epileptic drugs also cause sedation, which affects their sexual performance.

Eye witness say the deceased had no signs of sickness and looked well. However a post mortem report confirms that Kemigisa died of epilepsy.
